New Brighton Music

Happy New Year! Our first New Music post of the year is a bit of a catch up, since we put these on hold in December while we were posting our end of year roundup. It’s been so long since our last post that the band we’re most excited about blogging has put out two new tracks. The Go! Team posted up their latest track All The Way Live just yesterday:

And Mayday went up right at the very end of November. If you haven’t got a ticket to their gig at The Haunt on 11th February yet, then move fast because the dates for the whole tour are selling out all over the place:

Brighton Music Blog 2017 Top 25 – numbers 25-11

Making end of year lists is tough, especially for us. No, hear us out – this isn’t just some sob story. Most of the bands we write about are just starting out, so haven’t had albums out yet – should they be lower down the list or even omitted because they haven’t put out a long player? And conversely what about the bands who have released an album – surely they shouldn’t be higher in the list by default. And what about the more established bands – should we be including them at the expense of smaller bands? And how are we going to get around the fact that bands with more recent release or live dates are nearer the front of our mind than those who put records out at the start of the year? It’s a metaphorical minefield, so our list is rather arbitrary. It could easily have been twice as long, and as usual we’ve gone for bands rather than tracks or albums to get around it. Here’s numbers 25 through to 11: Continue reading

New Brighton Music

Here’s this week’s new music post, two weeks after our last one – we were out of the country last week though, so we’re playing catchup a bit now. Our first tune this week is from Brighton supergroup Alien Stadium, made up of Steve Mason and Primal Scream‘s Martin Duffy. Their first release is a track called This One’s for the Humans, a lolloping almost-baggy almost-bluesy number which is taken from a mini LP called Livin’ in Elizabethan Times which gets released on 1st December. Have a dig around for the version that’s up on Spotify which clocks in over six minutes long and gets a much more psychedelic groove on.

This week’s New Music post gives us here at Brighton Music Blog much happiness because this week we read about the return of The Go! Team. They’ve returned with a single called Semicircle Song, the first taste of an album of the same name. The single is out now, and the album follows in January, out on neon pink vinyl if you pick it up from Resident. There are also all sorts of bundles available from the Go! Team’s webstore too. Tickets are also onsale now for the launch gig which is at The Haunt on 11th February.

Matthew Hodson / Detach album launch

DETACH ALBUM FINAL -smallSo, Friday night’s New Faith gig wasn’t the only album launch we went to this weekend. Saturday night Matthew Hodson launched his debut album Detach at the Hope & Ruin. Matthew Hodson has previously graced the blog under his former artist name Bitbin, and his current moniker makes similar bass heavy electronic music. Support on the night came from Johanna Bramli and Knightstown, who Matthew Hodson plays with live, which meant that in essence he was supporting himself. The album is out now on Solitude records. New Brighton Music

It’s been a fortnight since our last New Music roundup, so we’re playing catchup from the off. We’ll kick off with the new EP from Yonaka, Heavy, which came out last Friday. As mentioned in our gig preview post they’re playing in a few weeks time at Patterns, and then again at the Green Door Store in January. Here’s EP lead track Bubblegum:

New Brighton Music

Here’s this week’s new music roundup. I’m going to start this week’s post with a band described by a friend as “The best live performance I have seen in some time”. He was talking about Penelope Isles, who have a new single out called Shining Gold. The beautiful chiming lo fi folk number coincides with the band’s current tour, which started at the Prince Albert on 18th September (which is where the quote above came from). Since then they’ve been down to the South West and hit London tomorrow before heading north, but this bit of the tour comes back to Brighton next Saturday where they play a joint headline gig with Porridge Radio at Latest on Saturday 30th September.

New Brighton Albums

We haven’t done a new album post in a few months, so it’s about time we stopped and looked at what local albums have come out recently, and what’s coming up.

Last night, Time for T launched their debut album Hoping, Something, Anything at the Rialto. There’s a new single, Ronda, which you can see below:
