Brighton Rocks #18 : Fröst

Untitled (5)es

Who are the your favourite local bands?
Jo: Electrelane, Gazelle Twin (not technically Brighton anymore…), Grasshopper, Merlin Tonto, AK/DK, I Am Ampersand…
Steve: All the above plus Pete Fij & Terry Bickers, Transformer and Jamal & Alaa

What’s the best venue?
Jo: The Prince Albert – it’s intimate and feels super special. The Dome has got to be up there too. I also love going to The Rosehill – Kassia and Jules have created a real hub.
Steve: I’ve also seen some great gigs in the Green Door Store recently.

What’s the best rehearsal space / studio?
Jo: Brighton Electric. Most of the time we rehearse in my little studio room at home though.
Steve: Ooosh Tours in Portslade has a great rehearsal space. For recording, Church Road Studios in Hove is excellent.

What’s the best club?
Jo: With a bunch of friends we’ve recently started a film club which involves lots of wine drinking, swimming in the sea, and talking about great films. My kind of club these days…!

What’s the best record shop?
Jo: Resident
Steve: I also like Mr Bongo

Where’s the best places to eat?
Jo: Cin Cin on Vine Street is a current favourite. Carlito Burrito, Fatto a Mano, Murasaki, Plateau, Kitgum Kitchen, Baby Boa at The Pond are always good options and The Set for a special occasion. Belgian Chips on St James are amazing with all the Belgian sauces just like back home.
Steve: I love the Chilli Pickle

What’s the best pub?
Steve: I normally drink in the Reservoir or the Village in Hanover these days, but I like the Battle of Trafalgar when I’m in town.
Jo: The Great Eastern

Who’s your favourite Brighton celebrity?
Jo: Matt King aka Super Hans and Nick Cave obviously.
Steve: Steve Coogan

What’s the best thing about Brighton?
Jo: being so close to the Downs, the cliffs, the sea; so easily connected to the rest of the world via Gatwick; and on top of that being a place of open mindedness, creativity and a green dot in the sea of blue.
Steve: Brighton & Hove Albion and the music scene of course

When was the last time you had any Brighton Rock?
Jo: don’t think I’ve ever had one…
Steve: Not sure I have either. I had some Southend rock when I was a kid.

Record Still Spinning by Fröst is out now. It will appear on the album Matters, due out on 28th September on Lost Room records

New Brighton Music

There’s loads of new music this week, but before I get on with that, there’s been a couple of comments on social media after the new music posts from people pointing out that I haven’t featured their band. Neither of these acts had actually sent us any links or information, which makes things quite difficult – while we try to be proactive we aren’t omniscient and things do pass us by. The best way of getting in touch to get featured is to drop a mail to BrightonMusicBlog@gmail.com, with soundcloud / bandcamp / youtube links (or Spotify if you must, but as you’ll see below they don’t look great on blogs powered by WordPress), making sure you mention that you’re from Brighton if we don’t know you.

July Gig Previews

Three days in it’s probably time to make our July gig post.

31958801_10156507911402941_8413843466894704640_oFirst up on Thursday 5th July the Long Goodbye launch their new album Wait Another Day at the Brunswick. Support comes from Seadog and Luke Hyttner.

DITZ release their new single Seeking Arrangement at the end of next week, and to celebrate they’re playing a launch gig at the Hope & Ruin next Tuesday (10th July). Also on the bill are Haze, Guru and Demonstration.

When is a gig not a gig? When it’s a new club night. Crest of Death is a new night at Green Door store hosted by Wytches, and the first one takes place on Wednesday 11th July. Wytches play live on the first Crest of Death, which will also feature DJ sets from Rhys Webb of the Horrors and Jordan Cook of Crewel Intentions, but expect other bands on future nights.

34069152_793567730846634_7103242193749409792_oBreathe Panel release their self titled debut album in the next few weeks too, and will be playing an in-store at Resident on 17th July. The only way into the gig will be to pre-order the album, which will give you two guest list places.

Thursday 19th July is the launch party for the new Projector single at Green Door Store. I Am Ashamed comes out that day on Roadkill records. Support comes from Egyptian Blue, CLT DRP and Beach Riot. There’s an afterparty too – a new club night being run by Jamie from Tigercub. The night’s called Club Coco, runs from 11-4 and will be playing his favourite electronica, Disco and French House.

Our next gig is the following night, also at Green Door Store – Animal House headline supported by The Family Chain.

Last but by no means least on Saturday 28th July the Rock House Festival takes place at Green Door Store. There’s loads of Brighton Music Blog favourites on the bill including grasshopper, Projector, Fragile Creatures and other states, as well as a host of others. As well as all that, it’s raising money for local charity Carousel.
