November Gig Preview

Every other blog post made today is probably a spooky Halloween themed blog post, but for us the date being the thirty first signifies that it’s time for our next new music post. Sometimes we that by a day or two, but we’ve got our housein order because the first gig to plug is a night called In Heaven Everything Is Fine, being put on tomorrow night (Thursday 1st November) by Super8Sync at The Nightingale Room above Grand Central. Nick Hudson (from The Academy of Sun), Mudlow, Seadog and Blatnova are all on the bill, accompanied by visuals from Cinema Iloobia and TAOS films.

There’s two gigs to mention on Thursday 8th November, both of which are EP launches. Projector play their biggest Brighton gig to date at The Haunt, launching their How Does It Feel EP, supported by LibraLibra and Ditz. Meanwhile, over at the Richmond, which seems to be doing a great job of re-establishing itself as a music venue rather than just a pub, Wax Machine are playing a gig to celebrate the launch of their new EP Mind Palace.

44423374_2098178203546812_2022415901147529216_oFinally, It’s Dana from Porridge Radio’s birthday on Saturday 10th, so Brighton Noise are putting on a special matinee gig to celebrate from 2pm until 5.30. There’s a threat of Porridge Radio playing happy birthday for half anhour, which you’ll have to go to the gig to find out how real that threat is. Support comes from Canadian Embassy, The Tubs and SUEP.

Brighton Rocks #20 : Ex-Display Model

A few months ago, a new account appeared in Instagram suggested people to follow section. It was in the name Ex-Display Model, but it didn’t have any posts, or any follows. Thanks, but no thanks Instagram. It popped up again a few weeks later, followed by a few music accounts that I follow, but still with no posts, so this time I thought maybe I would start following it myself. Then a few weeks later a single picture was posted, which looked like it might have been David and Ed from Fujiya & Miyagi, but I wasn’t 100% sure.  And then in August, Ex-Display Model put out their first single Immaculate Rip. A couple more tracks were drip fed out, then last Friday their self titled debut album was released with no great fanfare, slipped out for people to discover themselves. I got in touch to ask if they fancied doing a Brighton Rocks, but it turned out that AKDK are on tour in Brazil for the next few weeks so Ed wasn’t about. David was keen to strike while the iron was hot though, so he arranged for a stand in and the photo shoot went ahead anyway:

What’s the best thing about Brighton?
WHSmiths and the sea.

Who are the your favourite local bands?
grasshopper

What’s the best venue?
The Brighton centre. Not really.
I have a real soft spot for the Prince Albert. That’s where Fujiya & Miyagi used to play early on and whenever I go there it brings back fond memories.

What’s the best rehearsal space / studio?
Church Road Studios for recording and Ooosh in Portslade for practicing.

What’s the best club?
I honestly have no idea. There’s a northern soul night happening at the komedia on 10th November which looks good.

What’s the best record shop?
I like Monkey Music Emporium and obviously Resident. The one at the bottom of trafalgar street is good too but I’ve forgotten what it’s called. It’s a shame Borderline and Rounder are no longer around. And the one that used to be above the comic shop in Kensington gardens was interesting.

Where’s the best places to eat?
I don’t really like restaurants. Pizza express is ok.

What’s the best pub?
Watchmakers near Hove station.

Who’s your favourite Brighton celebrity?
Does Nick Berry still live locally? My dad enjoys ‘Heartbeat’ so he must have something about him.

When was the last time you had any Brighton Rock?
Never.

Ex-Display Model by Ex-Display Model is out now, available on Spotify, iTunes and Bandcamp (by clicking the image below)

Sometimes I wonder when I make these posts if I ever get any visitors from that corner of Liverpool who might feel like they’re being referenced. Who knows? Maybe they click away as soon as they realise, or maybe they stop and check out what the south coast has to offer? Anyway, onto that new music:

October Gig Previews

October already. How time flies. We’re not quite as prompt as we would have liked with this month’s gig previews post – if we were we might have tipped the Platform B FM licence launch at the Green Door Store last night. Instead though we’ll kick off with a gig that’s been mentioned before tomorrow night.

Untitled (12)sMatters by Fröst came out last Friday and was named Resident’s album of the day . They’ve also made the launch gig their gig of the week too, so you don’t have to just take our word for it. It takes place at the Prince Albert, with support from Spill Gold.

There’s another album launch taking place next Wednesday too. The Haunt sees the return of 12 Stone Toddler and marks the release of their new album Idiolalia.

Our next tip takes place on 12th October at Brighton Electric. According to what we’ve read, there will be “a FREE induction course presented by myself – special guest speaker & founder of the Temple of B, Ronald K. Moiste. Ronald will be promoting a radical new book: Skin and Bone, a chronicle of his journey into finding B and how she helped me find myself and de-calcify my pineal gland (and liver)”. What we believe is actually taking place is the launch party for Sking & Bone, the new single from Libra Libra, with support from Inwards and Battery Operated Orchestra, although there’s only one way to find out.

32650041_1752884008138860_1692977444094476288_o

One of the big releases last month was Black Honey‘s debut album. They head off on tour across the UK and Europe, playing Concorde 2 on Sun 14th October.

Wild Cat Strike‘s debut album comes out this Friday on Small Pond, but they’re waiting until Monday 15th October for the launch, which will take place at Pop Up Brighton (down near the i360). Support comes from Good Guy Clarence, I Feel Fine and Elliot Tatler.

41606980_685067261856493_1753955113430417408_oIt seems to be a month of plugging launch parties in this gig preview’s post. Here’s another – Lazybones launch their new single Heart Beat Like A Drum at Green Door Store on Wednesday 17th October. Also on the bill are Sit Down, Big and the Fat and Swoon.

Finally, the last we’ve got to mention is Our Girl, who are spending most of October on tour. They play a hometown gig at The Haunt on Friday 26th with Breathe Panel supporting.
