May is both the quietest month and the busiest month for gigs. It’s the busiest because The Great Escape hits town on the 17th turning every pub and street corner into a venue. We’ll be making a full blog post about who to see nearer the time. Aside from that though, things are pretty quiet , but we have found a few things that you might fancy.
Paper Hawk launch their new EP The Tide (which featured in yesterday’s new music post) at The Marlborough tomorrow night (Wed 2nd May). Support comes from Jacko Hooper and Josh McGovern.
Another single launch we spotted, also from a band who were in last night’s post, is Yakul‘s launch of their single Realigned. It takes place at Patterns on Wednesday 9th May, and Yakul are joined on the night by Isle of CC and Chloe Badur playing live and Tru Thoughts’ J Felix DJing.
We’re playing catchup again this week after our holidays last week, and it seems that we missed a flurry of activity, so once again we’re going to keep things pretty brief, limiting our words to just what you need to know about the tracks.

Here’s this week’s new music roundup, which comes with an apology to half of the bands included. We’re off on holiday at stupid o clock tomorrow morning and that means I should be spending my evening packing rather than blogging, so the tracks are included but half of my accompanying words aren’t, leaving you with just the words I note down before I flesh things out for some tracks. Sorry!
This weeks first tune is the new single from Orchards which somehow got missed from our last roundup. It’s called Luv You 2 and came out on 4th April. You can catch Orchards representing Brighton at the Great Escape next month
Next up is Underwater Boys who have a new single called Apricot. Underwater Boys next local gig will also be part of the Great Escape (get used to me saying this a lot over the next four weeks)
We can’t see Tuval mentioned in the line up for the Great Escape yet though. That doesn’t mean he won’t be playing (we know of at least one band who aren’t listed yet), or that he won’t pop up at an Alt Escape gig somewhere. Their My Love Don’t Worry EP came out last Friday and is released on download or limited CD:
At the end of the month Small Pond, rehearsal and recording studio, label and all round good eggs, are putting on the third annual installment of their festival. Bad Pond Festivalis taking place on 27th and 28th April at The Arch and features a host of bands from Brighton and beyond.
The Physics House Band headline the main stage on Friday night (with the other headliners being Alpha Male Tea Party, TTNG and USA Nails over the other stages / nights) with more local representation from InTechnicolour, Wild Cat Strike, Gender Roles, Delta Sleep, Cousin Kula, CLT DRP, Frank & Beans, Drip Gloss, Inwards, LibraLibra, Sit Down and Yumi & The Weather.
To get you warmed up for the festival Small Pond have shared a sampler with all the bands playing (see the bottom of the post, as well as a live video of Skin Remover by CLT DRP filmed at their studios:
Fans of The Physics House Band are hopefully already all over the band’s record store day release this weekend of a coloured vinyl edition of their album Mercury Fountain with additional bonus tracks.
Here’s this week’s New Music Roundup. We’re kicking things off with When She Flashes Her Smile at Me by Inwards. It’s taken from their forthcoming album Diesel which comes out on 27th April on Small Pond:
Jumanjiheadline the Haunt tomorrow night, playing the local date of their tour supporting their debut EP For Now which came out last Friday:
Next up is Heirloom with their new track Femme. You can catch them supporting Demob Happy this Saturday at The Haunt:
Ethan Barton is a songwriter originally from Devon but is now studying in Brighton. He released his More Happier EP in January, but didn’t promote it at the time and is now trying to get it out there, and we’re happy to oblige:
Luvia‘s debut single For You was released last Friday on My Little Empire records. If you’re going to the Great Escape then there’s a high chance of catching her – it seems that she’s playing at least three gigs over the weekend.
Scab Hand have a new EP out. Sparse Anatomy was released last week and was produced by Marc R Norris from Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster. Here’s EP opener Turkey:

Sit Down released their Cheap Luxe EP at the end of March. Here’s opener Mothership. The next chance to catch Sit Down in Brighton will be at Bad Pond Festival at the end of this month:
Black Peaks single Can’t Sleep came out a few weeks ago, but we’ve been a bit slow off the mark. Sorry guys. They’re off on tour soon, but with no Brighton date announced. They’re playing plenty of festivals over the summer though, and who knows what else is left to be announced:
Breathe Panel released their new track Carmine recently. The band have an album coming in July on Fatcat Records which you can probably hear some of live when they play at the Spectrum Record Store Day gig at the Dome on 21st April:
Last, but by no means least we have Zofff who have put out their third album fff, continuing the psychedelic journey of their first two records. Live dates are in the pipeline, but nothing has been announced yet.

It’s been a few weeks since out last post for which we can only apologise – we had a holiday, then jet lag, and only now we’re back on the blogging wagon. In that time both The Magic Gang and Fickle Friends have released their albums, and it seems to have been one of the busiest periods for other bands to share new music. We’d have no hope of catching up if we wrote up our new music post the way we normally do, with us much info as we have and details of any upcoming gigs, so for this post we’re going to keep things brief – just names of bands and tracks – and hopefully by next week we can get back to normal.
The beast from the east might be making it feel like deepest midwinter, but it’s actually the first day of March, so it’s time for some more another gig preview post. First up, this weekend AK/DK play their first Brighton gig since their album launch at the end of last year. It’s at Patterns on Saturday night, and support comes from Fruity Water.
Then on Tuesday 6th March Guru and Hake launch their new release at the Green Door Store. The split 10″ contains Medicine Man by Guru and After Space Legacy by Hake and can be bought at the show. Continue reading →
