Next week sees the return of The Great Escape, where we all get even less sleep than normal, and anywhere you could imagine a stage, and a few places you couldn’t, turn into venues for three days. It overshadows most other musical happenings in May, which is quite remarkable since May is also the month of Brighton Festival, so this post replaces our usual monthly gig preview. Continue reading

It’s the start of a new month, so it’s time for us to share the local gigs with local bands that have caught our eye. This month, lots of launches and festivals:
First up, Jouis launch their new album Mind Bahn at the Rose Hill on Thursday 4th April. Support comes from Ellie Ford and ticket are £5.50 in advance.
Our first festival to talk about is QM Records Moves Festival, which takes place at the Old Market on Saturday 6th April. There’s a fantastic line up of some of the finest Brighton based bands, headed up by Normanton Street and Kudu Blue. Continue reading

This Saturday (2nd March) Demob Happy headline the Concorde 2 playing a homecoming gig at the end of their current tour, before they head off to conquer America in the spring. Support comes from Sick Joy and Heirloom, so get there nice and early. Continue reading
So, it’s been a while since we’ve done a gig preview post, what with taking a few weeks off around Christmas, but we’re BACK and so are the good gigs in Brighton.
First up is the eighth Brighton Noise all dayer at the Green Door Store, which takes place tomorrow (Saturday 2nd Feb) and has a huge line up featuring Inwards, Soft Walls, Garden Centre, Big Slammu, Fruity Water, Dubais, M. Butterfly, The Estate Agents, R. Dyer and The International Debt.
The big name gig this month is Steve Mason who’s on the road touring his new album About The Light. He’s already played Newcastle and Glasgow, and will take in Manchester, London and Bristol before the hometown date on Saturday 9th February, which is at St Barts Church just off London Road. Every other blog post made today is probably a spooky Halloween themed blog post, but for us the date being the thirty first signifies that it’s time for our next new music post. Sometimes we that by a day or two, but we’ve got our housein order because the first gig to plug is a night called In Heaven Everything Is Fine, being put on tomorrow night (Thursday 1st November) by Super8Sync at The Nightingale Room above Grand Central. Nick Hudson (from The Academy of Sun), Mudlow, Seadog and Blatnova are all on the bill, accompanied by visuals from Cinema Iloobia and TAOS films. Continue reading
October already. How time flies. We’re not quite as prompt as we would have liked with this month’s gig previews post – if we were we might have tipped the Platform B FM licence launch at the Green Door Store last night. Instead though we’ll kick off with a gig that’s been mentioned before tomorrow night.
Matters by Fröst came out last Friday and was named Resident’s album of the day . They’ve also made the launch gig their gig of the week too, so you don’t have to just take our word for it. It takes place at the Prince Albert, with support from Spill Gold.
There’s another album launch taking place next Wednesday too. The Haunt sees the return of 12 Stone Toddler and marks the release of their new album Idiolalia. Continue reading
Yesterday a charity concert was held at St George’s Church in Kemptown for the Kit Tarka Foundation, MC’ed by David Shrigley, with Fujiya & Miyagi and Alice Russell & TM Juke at the top of the bill, and Gloria Cycles and The Miserable Rich reforming especially for the event. The Kit Tarka Foundation was set up around a year ago following the tragic early death of The Miserable Rich lead singer James de Maplequet’s baby son, and the evening wasn’t without it’s emotional moments, but the evening was a celebration for what would have been Kit’s first birthday. It’s the third of September, which means we’re overdue for our September gig preview post.
The big gig to mention this month though is Kitfest, taking place at St George’s Church on Saturday 15th September. It’s in aid of the Kit Tarka Foundation, a charity set up by The Miserable Rich lead singer James De Malplaquet following the sad early passing of his son at just thirteen days old. The Miserable Rich have been on hiatus for a few years but are reforming for the concert which sees Fujiya & Miyagi (playing their only Brighton gig of the year) and Alice Russell & TM Juke at the top of the bill for the evening, which will be MCed by David Shrigley. Gloria Cycles are also reforming for the night – newcomers to Brighton might know the name from the vintage sign in the Basketmakers, but Gloria Cycles was also the name of one of the city’s top bands around ten years ago – alongside Jess Bishop, We Bop Choir and 1BTN DJs.
