Brighton Music Blog 2018 Highlights

I’m not a fan of end of year lists. There’s the forced ranking of things, introducing subjectivity and pitting people against each other. There’s the fact that you might not remember things from the start of the year as well as recent tracks, or that some songs sounded great in the sunshine but right now it’s cold, wet and miserable. So instead, here’s a few tracks from 2018 that are highlights for us. No particular order, no claims that one is better than another, just what we think are a bunch of great tunes. There’s a few maybe more obvious bands missing (naming no names) – it’s been a brilliant year for Brighton Music – but some of the bands you might be thinking of haven’t been in touch, or haven’t got back to us when we’ve been in touch. Given how successful they’ve been they obviously haven’t needed a blog like us, and it’s not like we’ve been short of great music to post this year. Anyway, we’ve tried to post bandcamp links where we can, so if you like what you can hear, you can click through and buy from the site where the biggest proportion of the price goes back to the artist:

Fröst – Trail Away

The Fiction Aisle – Gone Today

Yumi & The Weather – Hustle

La Lune – He Breathes Colour When I Feel So Grey

Crayola Lectern – Secrets

Ex-Display Model – Autopilot

Blood Red Shoes – God Complex

LibraLibra – Animali

Projector – Break Your Own Heart

Anneka – Burst

The Go! Team – Chico’s Radical Decade

Moon Panda – Gun

Wax Machine – Time

Cate Ferris – Rise

Orchards – Double Vision

Our Girl – In My Head

Inwards – When She Flashes Her Smile On Me

Steve Mason – Walking Away From Love

The Great Escape Festival Preview

tge2018
It’s nearly that time again. Next weekend, the Great Escape rolls into town again, turning everywhere that you could fit a stage, and a lot of places where you can’t imagine a stage normally, into venues for a few days. We’re not going to go through the whole line up – first of all there are literally hundreds of bands playing, but also most of them aren’t from Brighton. Also, a lot of the good local stuff happens as part of the Alt Escape. What we’ve done instead is compiled a list of what we think is every Brighton band who are playing as part of the main festival, and asked a few of our favourite bands for their recommendations for the weekend. We’ve also got a list of what we believe is all the facebook events set up for Alt Escape gigs, which will provide you with a lot more information than you’ll get from anywhere else.

AK/DK (The Arch, 8pm Saturday + Fortune of War, 8.30pm Friday)
Tshegue – a Congolese / Parisian act that bring a brilliant Afro-electro post punk show, awesome!

La Lune (North Laine, 12:15 Saturday + Beyond Retro, 1:50pm Friday + Jubilee Square, 8pm Saturday)
My tips would be RYD, The Yellow Bellies, Amelia Caesar, and Currls.

LibraLibra (North Laine Brewery, Saturday 10pm + Brighton Electric Alt Escape Afterparty)
I just saw Idles at Liverpool sound city and they blew me away the performance was electric and there was this fierce buzz from the crowd, I couldn’t take my eyes off them.
Slugabed is also playing with his full live band and that’s an experience in itself, definitely check that out!
Black Futures – I am desperate to go to one of their shows, it’s fully Immersive and engages the audience – they sound huge!

Yumi & The Weather (Café Plenty, 8pm Thursday, White Rabbit 5.30 Saturday)
Hey Buddy, Alabaster dePlume, LU’AMI, Jouis, Cousin Kula, Bloom, Family Fiction, 47 Soul, Kaamal Williams, Ross From Friends, Slugabed, AK/DK, Sons of Kemet, Puppy, Yussef Dayes, Libralibra

Dark Horses (Hope & Ruin, 5.30 Thursday)
Say Sue Me and Deep Throat Choir

Frost (Marlborough, 7.45 Friday, Johanna Bramli solo sets Seven Stars 5pm Thursday as well as part of the Rose Hill’s Fake Escape)
Alice Boman, AKDK, Drahla, Jimothy Lacoste, Lisa Morgenstern, Men I Trust

New Brighton Music

Here’s this week’s new music roundup, starting off quiet, and getting noisier as we go along.

First up is La Lune, whose Bliss EP is every bit as lovely as the name suggests. Here’s EP opener He Breathes Colour When I Feel So Grey:
