New Brighton Music

We didn’t have a new music roundup last week, because we only had two tunes to write about, so we had two Brighton Rocks in a row. Now we’ve left it another week we’ve got plenty:

Artist: The Academy of Sun
Track Name: The Lily Tree
Taken From: The Lily Tree EP
Release Date: 15/6/18

Brighton Rocks #16 : Crayola Lectern

Normally we’re very strict about making sure we only write about Brighton based acts, and Crayola Lectern lives in Worthing these days, but he’s one of the precious few who we relax our rules for. He’s been a fixture on the Brighton scene for a number of years now, his first album came out on Brighton label Bleeding Hearts Recordings, and the launch for his new album Happy Endings was at the Rosehill.

What’s the best thing about Brighton?
For me, these days it is its proximity to Worthing. This works both ways as the two towns complement each other and provide things the other lacks. I love Brighton for its vibrancy and the feeling that you may follow your dream, at least for a while, that you can be your glorious, unedited self without fear of small town tut-tuttings. It has worn off significantly on the neighbour town, where a burgeoning community of creative types, writers, artists, weirdos, poets, bad-ass rock’n’rollers, radish-worshipping occultists, DJ’s, string quartets and experimentalists all do their thing whilst the town retains a sleepy serenity. Collaboration between the towns is increasing dramatically culturally, not least with Brighton’s creaking City College having being merged with Worthing’s thriving Northbrook, whose Theatre departmant is one of the top in the country and whose music department boasts some of the best equipped recording facilities in the South, giving incredible opportunities to students. New Brighton Music

Here’s this week’s new music, which kicks off with a brand new track from Fickle Friends that only went up earlier today. Not too many gigs to mention alongside the releases this week though for some reason.

June Gig Previews

We’re only a few days away from June, so it’s about time for another set of previews.

31870984_10155845867916622_8293160172981846016_oOur first tip is Crayola Lectern’s album launch at the Rosehill this Friday (1st June). Friday is also release day for Happy Endings, Crayola Lectern‘s second long player, and you can see the video for Rescue Mission in yesterday’s new music post.

Our next tip is another gig at the Rosehill, on Friday 8th June. Love Thy Neighbour and Immersion put on their fourth Nanocluster event, where Immersion and an invited guest play individual sets then join forces for the final section of the gig. Ulrich Schnauss joins them in June, following an incredible set from Laetita Sadier last month. Continue reading

New Brighton Music

We’re playing catchup this week, after a gig preview last week and the Great Escape the week before that there’s a lot of ground to cover. We’ll also be introducing a simplification in how we present the tracks too, so that hopefully we don’t get so behind in future.

Artist: Orbital
Track Name: Tiny Foldable Cities
Taken from: Monsters Exist LP
Release Date: 14th September 2018
Next gig: Brighton Racecourse 29th June

Gig Preview special

I know we made a gig preview post at the start of May, but there’s a couple of events this weekend that we didn’t have full details over before, but also deserve a special separate post.

27356349_1722171724511857_4684434858931215523_oThe first is the Mind My Music all dayer at the Circle Arts Centre in Portslade this Saturday. It’s headlined by BC Camplight, who won over everyone who saw them at the Great Escape last weekend and who has also just announced details of their new album on Bella Union due in August. Also on the bill is a rare opportunity to see The Electric Soft Parade, as well as a host of other local artists. The one day festival is being put on to raise funds for Music Minds Matter, a charity providing mental health support to the music industry, which following several sad events this year seems more necessary than ever. You can find out more, including where to buy tickets, on their Facebook event page. Continue reading

The Great Escape Festival Preview

tge2018
It’s nearly that time again. Next weekend, the Great Escape rolls into town again, turning everywhere that you could fit a stage, and a lot of places where you can’t imagine a stage normally, into venues for a few days. We’re not going to go through the whole line up – first of all there are literally hundreds of bands playing, but also most of them aren’t from Brighton. Also, a lot of the good local stuff happens as part of the Alt Escape. What we’ve done instead is compiled a list of what we think is every Brighton band who are playing as part of the main festival, and asked a few of our favourite bands for their recommendations for the weekend. We’ve also got a list of what we believe is all the facebook events set up for Alt Escape gigs, which will provide you with a lot more information than you’ll get from anywhere else. May Gig Previews

May is both the quietest month and the busiest month for gigs. It’s the busiest because The Great Escape hits town on the 17th turning every pub and street corner into a venue. We’ll be making a full blog post about who to see nearer the time. Aside from that though, things are pretty quiet , but we have found a few things that you might fancy.

30623893_2147671231926661_7631411409960070976_nPaper Hawk launch their new EP The Tide (which featured in yesterday’s new music post) at The Marlborough tomorrow night (Wed 2nd May). Support comes from Jacko Hooper and Josh McGovern.

Another single launch we spotted, also from a band who were in last night’s post, is Yakul‘s launch of their single Realigned. It takes place at Patterns on Wednesday 9th May, and Yakul are joined on the night by Isle of CC and Chloe Badur playing live and Tru Thoughts’ J Felix DJing.

New Brighton Music

We’re playing catchup again this week after our holidays last week, and it seems that we missed a flurry of activity, so once again we’re going to keep things pretty brief, limiting our words to just what you need to know about the tracks.

The biggest news this week is that Blood Red Shoes have a new single. It’s called God Complex and is out now on Jazz Life:

New Brighton Music

Here’s this week’s new music roundup, which comes with an apology to half of the bands included. We’re off on holiday at stupid o clock tomorrow morning and that means I should be spending my evening packing rather than blogging, so the tracks are included but half of my accompanying words aren’t, leaving you with just the words I note down before I flesh things out for some tracks. Sorry!

This weeks first tune is the new single from Orchards which somehow got missed from our last roundup. It’s called Luv You 2 and came out on 4th April. You can catch Orchards representing Brighton at the Great Escape next month

Next up is Underwater Boys who have a new single called Apricot. Underwater Boys next local gig will also be part of the Great Escape (get used to me saying this a lot over the next four weeks)

We can’t see Tuval mentioned in the line up for the Great Escape yet though. That doesn’t mean he won’t be playing (we know of at least one band who aren’t listed yet), or that he won’t pop up at an Alt Escape gig somewhere. Their My Love Don’t Worry EP came out last Friday and is released on download or limited CD:
