March Gig Previews

The beast from the east might be making it feel like deepest midwinter, but it’s actually the first day of March, so it’s time for some more another gig preview post. First up, this weekend AK/DK play their first Brighton gig since their album launch at the end of last year. It’s at Patterns on Saturday night, and support comes from Fruity Water.

Guru Hake

Then on Tuesday 6th March Guru and Hake launch their new release at the Green Door Store. The split 10″ contains Medicine Man by Guru and After Space Legacy by Hake and can be bought at the show. Continue reading

The Go! Team at Concorde 2 gallery

Last night we went to see The Go! Team play a sold out show at the Concorde 2. It’s no surprise it was sold out – their new album Semicircle is their best in years and their live performances are second to none. Not even the freezing weather could put a dampener on things. Here’s our pics. As usual, click through to view large: Continue reading

February Gig Previews

27024292_1758823704148932_4865391248267470806_oSo, that’s January pretty much done with, which means it’s time for our February gig roundup. First up is an all dayer at the Green Door Store this Saturday from our friends over at Brighton Noise. Thanks to the Facebook event saying “in no particular order” we can’t quite work out who’s headlining out of Dirty White Fever, Breathe Panel, Garden Centre, Penelope Isles (playing songs from their individual solo projects), Leatherhead, Tilt, Merlin Tonto, Perch and the National Intelligence Agency, but we trust their judgement and it’ll be great whatever you get to see. The Pure Conjecture and Brother Twain

We saw a couple of fantastic local bands last night at the Hope & Ruin, comprising a range of familiar local talent.

Brother Twain are the band of brothers Adrien and Etienne Rodes, and fronted by Miles Heathfield (of Clowwns) they play a 60s influenced garage psych with great applomb.  Their first album was released a year ago and can be heard here but they have a range of new tunes now too. Continue reading

Support Your Local Girl Gang at Sticky Mikes Frog Bar

Last night we went along to the new Support Your Local Girl Gang night at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar. The night has been started up by local promoters Rixson Music after reading about how under represented women are on bills across gigs and festivals in the UK. We got there a little too late to see opener Holly Deanna, but we did see Anna Leigh Stainton, IVI and Stranger Girl, all of whom are names to keep your eyes out for – we’ve had a couple of IVI’s tracks on the blog over the last year, and will no doubt be featuring the others in due course. Here’s our pics, as always, click to view large: Continue reading

Green Door Store 7th Birthday

Happy Birthday Green Door Store! Yesterday our favourite venue in town invited us along to their birthday gig. As we mentioned in our January gig preview post there were a couple of Brighton bands on the bill – Guru and Desire – so we pointed our lens at them and you can see the pics below. After posting our 2017 reflections in our top 25 over the past few weeks the time has come to look forward again. Here’s our January 2018 gig preview post.

GDS 7First up is a band who were in the top five of our end of year list. Fresh from supporting Fujiya & Miyagi on their UK tour in December, grasshopper are headlining their own gig at the Green Door Store on 3rd January, supported by Red Deer People and Olm. Continue reading

November / December gig preview

For this month’s gig preview post we’re actually going to cover November and December. Generally there aren’t as many gigs in December, and we’re normally distracted with end of year stuff on the blog, so it’s seems appropriate to cover two months in one post now. Continue reading

Spectrum / Dog in the Snow Album Launch gallery

Last night we went along to our first Spectrum gig in about eighteen months. They haven’t been quite as frequent in that period, but those that there have been we haven’t been able to make it along to. Now that they’re back to monthly again, hopefully they’ll be appearing a bit more regularly in these pages too. Continue reading

Matthew Hodson / Detach album launch

DETACH ALBUM FINAL -smallSo, Friday night’s New Faith gig wasn’t the only album launch we went to this weekend. Saturday night Matthew Hodson launched his debut album Detach at the Hope & Ruin. Matthew Hodson has previously graced the blog under his former artist name Bitbin, and his current moniker makes similar bass heavy electronic music. Support on the night came from Johanna Bramli and Knightstown, who Matthew Hodson plays with live, which meant that in essence he was supporting himself. The album is out now on Solitude records.
