Black Honey at Patterns gallery

We don’t get out nearly as much as we used to, and haven’t been able to support the live scene as much as we ought. Last night though, we pitched ourselves up in the front row at Patterns to catch Black Honey, on the road just in time for their new single Hello Today. They played to a sold out venue for over an hour – not bad for a band who haven’t even had an album out yet, and while their live set gets bigger and better each time we see them they haven’t forgotten their roots, with the old pink flamingo nestled in the back of the set. Another week, another new music round up. We’re kicking off this week with the new single from Black Honey which came out last Friday called Hello Today. We’ll be down the front for Black Honey’s sold out show next Thursday at Patterns. See you there.

Next up is Fear of Men who are off on tour again, covering Europe in September and October (stopping off at Patterns on 15th October), then off to America in November. To celebrate they’ve shared a video for another track from their Fall Forever album. This is Sane:

Bad Family have just shared their second single called I’m a Drunk. It seems that everyone I’m writing about is playing live soon – you can catch them at The Hope & Ruin next Monday.

The Hundredth Anniversary‘s first new music in a long time showed up a week or two ago. After I Was Thrown In The River is more melodic and less shoegaze than their early stuff, and is the first taster of their upcoming album Sea State Pictures.

The new Animal House EP Sorry comes out on 18th November. They’ve put out a video for the track Heavy which you can see below. We’d write about when they’re playing live, but they’re probably on stage at the Prince Albert as I’m typing this:

A Drop of Blood in a Bowl of Milk is the new EP from Whiskey for the Wounded which came out on 22nd September. If you missed the launch last week, you can catch them at the next Indie Noir night at the Verdict on 13th October.

Last but not least we had news in a few weeks ago of End Call, an album released on cassette by Bloody Death. Turn The Tables is the track that they’re choosing to showcase the album with on bandcamp, but the rest of the tape isn’t all trashy guitar – there’s some mellower stuff on there too.

We’ve been writing about albums more than individual tracks and without realising suddenly there’s loads to catch up. So without further ado, here’s the new one from Fujiya & Miyagi. It’s the first track to be shared from EP2, the follow up to EP1 which came out earlier this year. The track’s called Outstripping (The Speed of Light) and is out on 28th October. Fujiya & Miyagi have also announced a mini tour taking in Paris, Istanbul, Barcelona and Bristol, ending up in Brighton at The Haunt on 11th November:

Album news – Cold Pumas / Hanging Valley

We dropped the ball a few weeks ago and missed posting about the release of The Hanging Valley, the new album by Cold Pumas, which came out in the middle of August on local label Faux Discx (run by Cold Puma Dan Reeves). Cold Pumas are giants of the local scene and we’re kicking ourselves for missing the launch at the Hope & Ruin a couple of weeks back. It’s not too late for the London launch though, which takes place tomorrow night at Moth Club. Here’s this week’s new music round up. We’re kicking things off with news of the second album from the brilliant Fiction Aisle who completely unexpectedly put out a new album last week. It’s called Fuschia Days, and is available as a download or on very limited cd. There’s only two cds left – that’s how limited it is. Where The Fiction Aisle’s first album was a huge orchestral widescreen affair, the new album feels more sparse, but no less lacking in vision. A fantastic progression. Continue reading →

New Brighton Albums

After a bit of an absence because a teething baby is higher up my priorities than writing blog posts, we’re back with some new music and not just new tracks, but whole albums.

Fear-of-Men-Fall-Forever Fall Forever by Fear of Men came out on Kanine Records on June 3rd, the same day as the band played a live instore at Resident to promote the record. The album is a follow up to 2014’s Loom and shows the band branching out sonically and lyrically. Jess Weiss went into the process of writing with a desire to develop her own voice, rather than hiding behind metaphors and oblique references, and the album features a much broader aural palette compared to it’s predecessor. We already posted up the video for Island, so here’s the video for one of the other tracks, Trauma:

Moulettes-Preternatural-300x300 We’ve been fans of Moulettes for a long long time at Brighton Music Blog, and their performance at One Church confirmed that they still deserve a place in our hearts. Moulettes also played a live instore at Resident to promote Preternatural, the week before Fear of Men and are now off on tour all around the world, currently in Canada. Moving further and further away from their folk roots, the new material could be described as prog, with it’s switching time signatures and 70s sounding guitars. Here’s the lead single from the album, Behemoth:

Phoria-Volition Last of all we have news of the debut album from Phoria, which has been a long time coming – their first EP appeared in 2013. Volition was released on 3rd June on X Novo, and the album launches (in Brighton and London) were meant to be taking place this week. Sadly, Phoria main man Trewin Howard is out of action, so the gigs have been postponed for now. We’ll bring you details of the rescheduled dates as we have them. In the meantime, here’s Loss, which has been suggested to us as one of the standout tracks:

Here’s this week’s dose of new music for you all, slightly bigger than normal because I didn’t get around to posting last week. Our first track is the new one from Sea Bed called Moving Ghosts, which gets a release on Four Thieves records on vinyl on 11th March (which you can pre-order here):

Miamigo have shared some more 80s-tastic synthpop. This is Pot Luck:

Thyla have followed up last year’s Us and Them with Car Crash, an ambitious, angular slice of guitar pop:

Great Pagans premiered their new single over on Steregum last week. The band are releasing Call of the Wild on Anti-Ghost Moon Ray on 11th March.

Tuska are the third band we’re writing about who are releasing their new single on 11th March. Their new track is called We Could Be Alone, and is a must-listen for fans of Tame Impala. If you like what you hear you can catch the band at Sticky Mike’s on 4th March:

Landslide is the debut single from Loa Loa, a raucous three minute garage cacophony committed to tape at Brighton Electric

Changing tack completely, this is White Peaks, with their new dreamy electronic pop song Easy:

Nicolas and the Saints are releasing their album Years in the Making at the end of the month (or at the start of the month if you pledged to their indiegogo campaign). The album was literally years in the making, with recording taking place over seven years. Here’s the album’s penultimate track Been Hurt Before:

Warsaw Radio are returning to their Irish roots for the launch of their new single Down by the Sea. Their mini tour starts this time next week and takes in Dundalk, Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway:

Electric Greyhound make woozy electronica, and have just posted up their latest track Flounder:
