Gig Preview special

I know we made a gig preview post at the start of May, but there’s a couple of events this weekend that we didn’t have full details over before, but also deserve a special separate post.

27356349_1722171724511857_4684434858931215523_o The first is the Mind My Music all dayer at the Circle Arts Centre in Portslade this Saturday. It’s headlined by BC Camplight, who won over everyone who saw them at the Great Escape last weekend and who has also just announced details of their new album on Bella Union due in August. Also on the bill is a rare opportunity to see The Electric Soft Parade, as well as a host of other local artists. The one day festival is being put on to raise funds for Music Minds Matter, a charity providing mental health support to the music industry, which following several sad events this year seems more necessary than ever. Matthew Hodson / Detach album launch

DETACH ALBUM FINAL -small So, Friday night’s New Faith gig wasn’t the only album launch we went to this weekend. Saturday night Matthew Hodson launched his debut album Detach at the Hope & Ruin. Matthew Hodson has previously graced the blog under his former artist name Bitbin, and his current moniker makes similar bass heavy electronic music. Support on the night came from Johanna Bramli and Knightstown, who Matthew Hodson plays with live, which meant that in essence he was supporting himself. The album is out now on Solitude records. August Gig Previews

A few days later than anticipated (aren’t we always apologising for late posts?) here’s a few of the gigs happening around town in August.

joker s First up is a series of gigs at the Joker called “Wanna Hang?”. They’re taking place every Tuesday in August (so there’s been one already and the next is tomorrow night). The future gigs see headlines from Breathe Panel, The New Tusk and Beachtape, but there’s four bands on each night. Tickets are only a mere three pounds which strikes us as a bargain.

Next Sunday is what’s probably Brighton Music Blog faves grasshopper‘s last gig for a while. They’re on the bill with Murder Boys and Strange Cages at The Prince Albert.

The following night (Monday 14th August), Brighton Noise are also putting on a night at the Prince Albert. It’s headlined by 80’s Matchbox B-line disaster spin-off Piano Wire, and also has T House from Charlottefield / Sweet Williams on the line up, but we’re most interested in this gig because it’s the debut performance from Black Bunny, Thomas White’s new band. July Brighton Gig Previews

We don’t do gig previews that much any more, mainly because we don’t get out nearly as much as we used to. We’ve got a big feature coming, but it’s taking a little while to get together, so to tide you over until then, here’s a few gigs that have caught our eye over the coming month:

Tomorrow night (Monday 10th July), Bleeding Hearts almost celebrate their fifteen birthday at The Rialto. As they put it: “We’d planned to host an alldayer only to find out that our adversaries had used their telemeters to evil effect. Due to dimentional complications we will not be celebrating the actual anniversary but instead our inability to celebrate our longeveness.”. On the bill are Garden Centre, Academy of the Sun, Gary Goodman and Sam Cutting. Continue reading →

AK/DK and Fröst at the Hope & Ruin

On Friday night we were lucky enough to be right down the front for two fantastic bands at a sold out gig at the Hope & Ruin. It’s been more than a year since AK/DK played in Brighton, but it’s been less than a year since Fröst have been going (although both members are have been in bands for over ten years). Gallery : Fujiya & Miyagi and Lost Idol at The Haunt

Last Friday night we headed down to the Haunt to catch Fujiya & Miyagi round off a mini tour to promote their new release EP2. The set covered most of the two new EPs and skipped through a greatest hits of their back catalogue with Ankle Injuries, Uh, Collarbone and Flaws all in the set list. Best of all was the reintroduction of Electro Karaoke, which they always used to close their set with but had been absent for a few years. Support came from Lost Idol who played a set drawn mainly from his recent Chrome Machine Tales album.

Black Honey at Patterns gallery

We don’t get out nearly as much as we used to, and haven’t been able to support the live scene as much as we ought. Last night though, we pitched ourselves up in the front row at Patterns to catch Black Honey, on the road just in time for their new single Hello Today. They played to a sold out venue for over an hour – not bad for a band who haven’t even had an album out yet, and while their live set gets bigger and better each time we see them they haven’t forgotten their roots, with the old pink flamingo nestled in the back of the set.
