Here’s a blog post I started writing back in SEPTEMBER. I’ve been terrible about writing blog posts, but at least the excuse of a five month old baby is a pretty good one. Normally I’d write a paragraph to go with each track, letting you know about release dates and launch parties, but in the interests of actually getting this posted, here without any introduction is some of the (now not so) new music that we heard around six weeks ago. To everyone who’s sent us tracks since, watch this space. Hopefully the next update won’t take as long!
Here’s our first update in a little while. The usual excuses don’t apply – we were on holiday instead. Whatever the excuse though there’s still over a week’s worth of new music to catch up on.
Our first track is a new free download from Alex Banks. It’s called All Over and it features fellow Brightonians Alphabets Heaven. Here’s the video for it, you can download the track via Alex’s website.
It’s been a few weeks since we’ve done a new music roundup. There’s doesn’t seem to be quite as much music coming out as there was a couple of months back for some reason, but there’s still plenty for us to write about. We would write about the new Tigercub track Destroy, leaner and more angular than some of their melodic tracks, but we can’t share the stream. You’ll have to click here to go over to soundcloud and listen for yourself.
In case you hadn’t realised, this weekend is The Great Escape festival, probably the most important musical event in the local calendar. There’s a few Brighton bands tucked in the main festival, but the bulk of the homegrown talent features in the line-up of the Alternative Escape – a sister festival that runs side by side where for most events you won’t need a wrist band, or have to shell out any money to see some fantastic live acts. There are literally hundreds of bands playing over dozens of events so to help guide you through the weekend here’s our pick of some of the BN postcode-based performers you can catch.
The fun begins on Wednesday night with Late Night Lingerie vs The Great Escape at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, where can catch the first of Demob Happy‘s many sets of the festival as well as Skirts last ever gig. Inspired Artists Agency who represent quite a few Brighton bands are taking over Latest Music Bar on Thursday, and we’re hoping to pop in for The Slytones at 2.55pm and Moulettes who play at 6.30pm. There are 20 bands over 28 sets on at The Mesmerist on thursday, on the stages put together by Liberty Music PR, amongst others. If we had to pick one it would be Phantom Runners who are on at 9.40pm. Bleach is being taken over by Strong Island Recordings and Pic & Vinyl on thursday, where Brighton Music Blog favourites Curxes take to the stage at 5.40pm. Over at London Road’s newest cafe Presuming Ed, Cate Ferris tops their line up. Miamigo play their debut show at Patterns (formerly Audio) at 6.45pm.
Yes, yes. We’re almost a week into April. But we’ve had Easter in the way, and we were overwhelmed with new music last month. Here’s our top picks:
1. The Go! Team – What D’You Say?
Highlight of the month for us was the brand new Go! Team album The Scene Between. If you haven’t gone out and bought it yet what are you waiting for?
2. IYES – Glow
Glow was originally meant to be out at the tail end of last year, but being pushed back a few months in record company schedules makes it no less majestic.
3. Rockerswitch – Show Me
Rockerswitch’s debut starts off quite lazy and gradually gets more and more spaced out. Great stuff.
4. Mount Bank – Everything is Glass
We love everything on Mount Bank’s Island Life EP but opener Everything is Glass is our favourite with it’s bright synth strings and piano motif.
5. Tigercub – Hold On
Showing a more mature side than seen on their previous releases, Tigercub’s latest demo was so good it got picked up by NME and streamed on their website.
6. Foreign Skin – Enemy
A favourite from their live sets, Foreign Skin has finally shared the beguiling Enemy on their Soundcloud stream
7. Ambassadeurs – Can’t See You
Can’t See You is the first taster from Ambassadeurs next EP. On the strength of what we’ve heard from Ambassaders in the past it’s almost inevitable that we’ll be featuring other tracks from the EP in coming months.
8. Sea Bed – Haunted
Sea Bed have shared a couple of tracks from their upcoming Rosso EP which drops next week. Our pick of the two is the almost garagey Haunted.
9. GAPS – All Me All You
GAPS debut album comes out in May. As well as featuring a couple of their older singles it also includes All Me All You, the first new track taken from “In, Around The Moments”
10. Fools Empire – The Professionals
Last up is The Professionals, the first of three singles coming out in a sequence from Fools Empire. Can’t wait for the other two.
Here’s this week new music roundup. Another busy week packed with the usual diversity of genres and styles
First up is Cousin, whose new EP Music to Polish Your Rifle To comes out on 23rd March. The follow to 2013’s Alternate Tunings for Regular People carries on the same themes, sounding like Tortoise if they were all into guitars. and will be co-released by Fcking The Night and Barely Legal Records on 12″ / download on. There’s not nearly enough psychedelic country soul that comes out of Brighton, so we were pleased to hear that Rocker Switch have released Show Me. They’ve pressed up just 45 7″s which you can buy direct from the band or you can pick up the track on download from the bandcamp link below:
Aashton has put out a new EP a few weeks ago which we’ve only just been given the heads up on. Humans contains three tracks of sophisticated house, and is available now on download from Beatport on Phonetic records. Here’s the title track
We caught Normanton Street play an intimate gig at the Gladstone a few weeks ago and loved it. You should do your very best to make it down to their show at The Haunt on Friday. In the meantime here’s the latest video they’ve put up, for the song New Dawn, taken from their Much Respect EP which came towards the end of last year.
Tigercub have posted up a new demo on Soundcloud. This is called Hold On:
A Basement Story is the new side project from Alexander from the Dubarrys. There’s a few tracks of laid back breezy psychedelia up on soundcloud, the most recent of which is In Your Dreams:
Tomorrow night Orchards launch their new EP at The Hope & Ruin. Constantly moving is an EP of five tracks at the poppier end of math rock and is out now via bandcamp:
Finally we’ve just been told about the new single Exposed by Mon Frere. It’s take from their album Urban Glow features the vocal talents of Kate Wilds, and a video shot in the studio and out on Devil’s Dyke:
At the start of the week we posted what we said was “probably” our last New Music post of the month. As it turns out, there’s been so many great tunes in our in box we’ve decided to squeeze in another.
This evening we got very excited when Fujiya & Miyagi posted a brand new remix of Daggers from their latest album Artificial Sweeteners put together by Stephen Morris from New Order
Blood Red Shoes have launched their own label called Jazz Life, and the first release will be out on 1st December from Tigercub with a newly recorded version of live favourite Centrefold:
Tyrannosaurus Dead‘s new album Flying Ant Day is out a week next monday. To get everyone in the mood they’ve shared the track Bagged & Boarded:
Ewan Hoozarmi has a new free download up on Soundcloud. Reaching Dragons is five minutes of funky electro-house:
As well as tomorrow night being Normanton Street’s EP launch at The Haunt and Spit Shake Sister’s single launch at Bleach, it’s also the next Spectrum at the Dome Studio Theatre, which this month is headlined by Speak Galactic. Joining them on the bill is Abraham Moughrabi, who’s recorded a live video of Cross The Line for the Site and Sound part of Spectrum in advance of the night:
One of the supports at the Spit Shake Sisters launch tomorrow is Morning Smoke. They got in touch to let us know about their new single Hunger which is out on December 1st:
As I’m writing this, I’m missing out on Prince Vaseline playing live at the Prince Albert supporting 80s Matchbox spin off group Piano Wire. If you didn’t make the gig either (or maybe if you did and you’re reading this later), here’s the video for their new track Orchid:
Finally a new remix by IYES who are on the brink of releasing some new material of their own very soon. Here’s their taken on Jack Garratt‘s Worry, which they’ve turned into a much more upbeat, dancable affair:
May always passes too fast for us in Brighton — too many things to do and not enough time to do them all. We did get enough time to get our ears around plenty of local new music though, and here’s our pick of the bunch.
1. Fujiya & Miyagi – Caucasian Sweat
Our most listened to track this month was Caucasian Sweat, taken from the bonus disc of their new album Artificial Sweeteners. That’s nowhere to be found online – it’s from the bonus disc, part of the incentive for you to put your hand in your pocket and spend some of your hard earned money on the cd – so here’s album opener Flaws instead:
2. Eagles for Hands – Glitterall
Last month Handprints topped our chart. The new Eagles for Hands double A side is still on heavy rotation at Brighton Music Blog towers and this month we’re featuring the chilled house b-side Glitterall:
3. Tigercub – Blue Blood
Number three in our chart is the new 7″ from Tigercub which comes on rather cool blue vinyl:
4. Adolescent – Golden Halls part II
Golden Halls is the new EP from Adolescent. Part One is a short piano piece with additional ambient textures, part two which we’re featuring is this fantastic effervescent electronica:
5. Us Baby Bear Bones – Old
This month Us Baby Bear Bones split up and left us with a final EP – Ursari – to remember them by. Our favourite track was the wonky r’n’b of Old:
6. IYES – Toys
In retrospect, it shouldn’t have been any great surprise that IYES latest demo was so good, after all Lighthouse (now sadly taken down from their soundcloud page) was just a demo. Anyone wondering if they can maintain their high standard should take a listen to Toys:
7. Gazelle Twin – Antibody
I don’t think I’ve been disturbed my a music video quite as much since Aphex Twin’s promo for Come To Daddy. Not for the faint hearted, but brilliant nonetheless:
8. Alice Amelia – 11:11
Alice Amelia’s 11:11 is the kind of music that you’ll want to be hearing once the sun finally comes out properly – soulful r’n’b for summer days:
9. Sam Organ – It’s cool if you don’t want to say anything, I’ll just say nothing too
Sam Organ’s latest offering is the second track in this month’s ten from KLSDCP records. They also put out the Adolescent EP, and the downtempo beats of “It’s cool if you don’t want to say anything, I’ll just say nothing too” sit perfectly alongside it:
10. Winston & Goldstein – Non omnis moriar
Finally we have Non Omnis Moriar. We joked when we wrote about this at the very end of April that we don’t often post up Latin on the blog, but we’ve also gone and featured Us Baby Bear Bones Ursari in this month’s top ten (Ursari being Bear in Latin). You can catch Winston & Goldstein live for free at the Green Door Store on 9th June, on the bill with Brighton Music Blog favourites Dog in the Snow.
Here’s this week’s dose of new music. A real mixed bag, as usual. First up is the video for the new Tigercub single Blue Blood. We’ve mentioned this before, but the video has only just appeared online:
Next up is The Physics House Band’s Samuel Organ with his latest upload to soundcloud, whose title is a real mouthful – It’s cool if you don’t want to say anything, I’ll just say nothing too. The track is easier on the ears than it is on the tongue – lush chilled electronica.
We don’t often post Latin up on the blog but we’ve got reason to with the new track from Winston & Goldstein – Non Omnis Moriar (The Dead Can). It’s been more years than I care to remember since I studied any Latin, so I’ve deferred to Google translate, which tells me that Non Omnis Moriar means I Will Not Die, and the phrase gets chanted over electronic beats which build up over the course of the track. This is the second tgrack we’ve heard from Winston & Goldstein’s upcoming album In The Eyes of Others, and on the basis of these, we’re very keen to hear some more.
Alice Amelia has grown massively since we first saw her and with her debut single, it feels like she’s properly arrived – Sassy r’n’b vocals and big production, 11:11 is really rather good.
K-TV, which got a premier on XLR8R last week, is the second track that we’ve heard from Adolescent‘s upcoming Golden Halls EP. All effervescent electronica and phased synths, this is pushing all out buttons.
Time to wake up a bit now, with the new single from The Modes. The band say they’re influenced by Royal Blood and the Black Keys, and you can hear these influences comin through on Not This Time:
Finally we’re finishing up with an EP from Summa, who has an EP out called Roads – The beautiful, ambient Diapason is the lead track:
It’s been a while since we made a Weekend Gig Picks post, but with as many great gigs as Brighton has this weekend, we couldn’t resist.
Tomorrow night we’ll be down at The Haunt where Moulettes play a hometown gig in advance of their upcoming album Constellations. Also on thursday, at Bermuda Triangle, Tigercub are launching their new single Blue Blood (which comes out on limited translucent blue 7″ on 5th May). And as if that wasn’t enough choice, Brighton Music Blog favourite Crayola Lectern is playing at the Verdict, on the bill with Cardiacs’ William D Drake.
On Friday night we’re off to the Concorde 2 for Blood Red Shoes, currently on tour around the UK (where Wytches joined them on a few dates, but unfortunately won’t be at the Brighton gig). Up at The Hope, Phantom Runners are holding their album launch, supported by Glossy Coat and Young Night. It’s also this month’s Les Enfants Terribles at the Blind Tiger headlined by Spit Shake Sisters. And then over at the Red Roaster café Hidden Trail Records are hosting a night showcasing their first proper signing Ellie Ford.
We’re also out on Sunday night too, for Milk and Biscuits‘ gig at the Blind Tiger where Prince Vaseline and Cuddly Shark support.
