Four Videos – Jennifer Left, Abi Wade, Fear of Men, Curxes

Here’s four videos to keep you entertained. Two for new songs, two for some not so new songs. Jennifer Left and Abi Wade released their new singles yesterday (and Jennifer Left is having a launch party for hers at the Blind Tiger on Thursday). Mosaic by Fear of Men and Spectre by Curxes both came out earlier in the year, but the videos have only just appeared:

Moulettes / Uca’s Dance

The Moulettes have a new single out soon! In a few weeks time, Uca’s Dance comes out, and it’s classic Moulettes – fiddles, close harmonies, and stomping rhythms. It also features the talents of one Ted Dwane

The band are having a launch for the single up in London on 24th November at The Tabernacle up in London. Book your tickets from Communion, and you could be in with a chance of winning the EP. Book 6 or more tickets, and you could be in with a chance of Moulettes playing a gig at your house. How amazing would that be?

If going all the way to London seems a bit of a trek, The Moulettes are playing at the Komedia on 21st November, supporting Arthur Brown.

Fear of Men Mosaic Single Launch

Yesterday Fear of Men played the Brighton launch of their new single Mosaic at the Green Door Store, at an event put on by Be Nothing called HappyFest. It was an all dayer, and loads of other bands played – The Hundredth Anniversary, Feature, Wild Cat Strike, Flamingods, Furrow, Lovepark, Female Band, and Shudder Pulps. We could only make it for the end of end of the night and caught Boston’s Female Band and the headliners. Fear of Men make a point of not playing too frequently, making their live gigs more of an event, but have broken cover for their new single – which you can buy on 7″ from Resident here. I could tell you how much I enjoyed them live, how great the performance was, how their collection of releases so far sound like a really sold set of songs, how I can’t wait to hear the new stuff that they’ve been holed away writing this year, but rather than all that, here’s a few shots from their set (click on the pics to view large):

Jennifer Left / Diggory

In case you haven’t seen it, the video for the new Jennifer Left single has landed. Diggory is the second release to come from her forthcoming album Hushabye, which has been produced by Tim Bidwell, and the video has been made by Thom Undrell, who also put together the fantastic video for Black Dog earlier this year. Diggory hits the shelves on 5th November, and Jennifer is having a launch party at the Blind Tiger on the 8th November. See you there!

Kovak / Living The Dream

Kovak come over all ABBA crossed with Blondie on their new single Living The Dream. It came out on monday, but the video dropped today and is being featured over on Vevo – another coup for the unsigned band. After getting playlisted on radio 2 for their last single Killer Boots, they’ve now all over Vevo (owned and run by the major labels as a way of showing off what they’ve got to offer). The fantastic looking video features footage shot in  the Pavilion – not something they let just anyone do!

The band are currently holed away in the studio recording their new album with Andy Gray (who’s worked with Hard Fi, Paul Oakenfold, Gary Numan and Enter Shikari), but will be coming out to play this weekend for Playgroup festival.

Saint Coltrane / Iron Dracula

There’s not enough rock on the blog. It’s entirely our fault, because there’s plenty of it about, and it wasn’t hard to sniff out at the Hobgoblin (before it changed), or the Hydrant. We don’t get too many rock bands contacting the blog either, presumably because they look and see that we haven’t written about too many rock bands. It’s a bit of a catch 22 chicken and egg vicious circle type thing.

In an attempt to make some small amends, here’s the first release Saint Coltrane, who have made some waves on the live circuit and are sharing their debut 7″ with Miami’s Weird Wives on Enjoyment Records. Iron Dracula, whose video appears below, appears on the vinyl release, while the digital release also includes their cover of The Pixies Debaser.

The 7″ can be ordered through the Enjoyment Records website. The band next play in Brighton supporting Dope Body at The Hope on 20th October, along with fellow Brighton band Sealings.

Cate Ferris / deep breath ready get set GO

Cate Ferris has been a live favourite of ours for a few years before we even started the blog. Over that time she’s developed an impressive one woman set involving a guitar, several keyboards, flute, guiro, drum and a loop pedal.

My fear before hearing the cd was how it would sound. Would the tracks stand up without the performance element to them? Would putting the songs into a studio setting make them lose all their charm?

Thankfully there’s nothing to worry about, mainly because the one constant throughout everything isn’t affected all. Cate’s warm rich voice is what really elevates the live sets, and hasn’t been held back on the recordings either. Under the watchful eye of Tim Bidwell (who’s also produced the likes of Jennifer Left and House of Hats) the vocals are at the fore and a band has been put together to bolster the sound that Cate makes on her own when she plays live.

Leave a Light On is a sad acoustic number with lovely strings. Trapeze is almost circus-like with it’s flute flourishes. Condensation is the track the gives the EP it’s slightly wordy title, and is a more upbeat stomper. If you’re wondering where you might have heard Doll on a Music Box before then, yes, it is from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!

The New Union / Without You

When I first came across The New Union on Soundcloud, I thought that they were a band who’d been around for a few years who were showcasing their releases so far. A while later I saw a flyer for one of their gigs and I thought they had a major label design team behind them. When I got to the gig they were as tight as you could get and looked like a band rather than a collection of people who had grabbed instruments and got onstage. But The New Union haven’t even released a record yet.

All this changes on the 8th of October, when the band put out their debut single Without You. Produced by Ian Dowling (who’s worked with the likes of Temper Trap, Bombay Bicycle Club, Kasabian and recent Brighton resident Adele) the song is three minutes of soaring guitar pop which sounds like a band several years into their career rather than one putting out their first record.

The band launch the record with a gig upstairs at Fitzherberts on 12th October. Get there early – it’ll be rammed.

Fear of Men / Mosaic

Normally I hold off on writing about things until close to their release date – it always frustrated me reading articles in music magazines about tunes I wouldn’t hear for weeks and weeks. And I figured that it’s better for the bands too – a reminder about their releases close to when they come out might improve their sales a bit, allowing them to make more music for us all to enjoy.

But I’m throwing all that out of the window today, because the new Fear of Men single has just dropped into my inbox, and I want to share it with the world. It got it’s premier earlier today on Pitchfork, and it’s up on Soundcloud for everyone to enjoy. Hot on the heels of Green Sea which came out in May, Mosaic is a bit brighter and airier than it’s predecessor, and is sprinkled with samples over the band’s now trademark guitar pop.

Mosaic is being released on the legendary Too Pure Records and comes out on October 15th on limited blue vinyl. You can pre-order it from Resident here. Fear of Men are having a launch party for the single at the Green Door Store on 20th October, supported by Hundredth Anniversary.

Shrag / Devastating Bones

Shrag release the second single from their album Canines on Monday. Devastating Bones is a lo fi glam rock indie stomp, which we think might have rather rude lyrics. Judge for yourself by watching the video, where they come over all biology text book.

Devastating Bones by Shrag is out on Fortuna Pop on Monday 10th September, on limited 7″, and is backed with a new b-side “Broken Glass & Fingernails”
