They haven’t been quite as frequent in that period, but those that there have been we haven’t been able to make it along to. So, Friday night’s New Faith gig wasn’t the only album launch we went to this weekend. Saturday night Matthew Hodson launched his debut album Detach at the Hope & Ruin. Matthew Hodson has previously graced the blog under his former artist name Bitbin, and his current moniker makes similar bass heavy electronic music. Support on the night came from Johanna Bramli and Knightstown, who Matthew Hodson plays with live, which meant that in essence he was supporting himself. The album is out now on Solitude records. On Friday night we were privileged to be invited to the launch of The New Faith‘s debut album Me On You, held at the Brighthelm Centre. Support on the night came from Whiskey for the Wounded, Other States and Supermarket, and all ticketholders got a couple of free beers thrown in too, from local brewers Bartlebeys. Continue reading
Here’s our now-officially-regular-again October gig preview post. And it’s only the 3rd October! It’s getting nearer to the start of the month every time we do one.
There’s a lot to see this weekend, and hopefully something for everyone. On Friday night (6th) you could opt for The Dials, who launch their album at the Hope & Ruin, accompanied by a lightshow by Innerstrings and also a DJ set by Steve Mason. Alternatively you could head to the Rosehill where Shona Foster plays with her new band, supported by Ellie Ford. Or you could head to the Prince Albert, where Sparrow (or should that be Sprrw these days?) launch their new album

A week ago today, Pete Fij and Terry Bickers played at the Rialto on the Brighton date of their tour to support their new album We Are Millionaires, and we were privileged to be invited along. The album is a beautiful thing, not nearly as downbeat as Pete and Terry described it on the night. Sure, it’s not a cheery pop album, but it’s more reflective than depressing, and the thing that we loved was the quality of the songwriting an musicianship on show. One of these days we’ll get around to posting our gig preview posts at the end of the previous month rather than a few days into the new month. Not this month though. If I was on the ball, I’d have posted about ZOFFF’s gig at the Prince Albert last Sunday, where they were joined onstage by Terry Bickers and Jo Spratley and lit by Innerstrings. A few days later than anticipated (aren’t we always apologising for late posts?) here’s a few of the gigs happening around town in August.
First up is a series of gigs at the Joker called “Wanna Hang?”. They’re taking place every Tuesday in August (so there’s been one already and the next is tomorrow night). The future gigs see headlines from Breathe Panel, The New Tusk and Beachtape, but there’s four bands on each night. Tickets are only a mere three pounds which strikes us as a bargain.
Next Sunday is what’s probably Brighton Music Blog faves grasshopper‘s last gig for a while. They’re on the bill with Murder Boys and Strange Cages at The Prince Albert.
The following night (Monday 14th August), Brighton Noise are also putting on a night at the Prince Albert. It’s headlined by 80’s Matchbox B-line disaster spin-off Piano Wire, and also has T House from Charlottefield / Sweet Williams on the line up, but we’re most interested in this gig because it’s the debut performance from Black Bunny, Thomas White’s new band. We don’t do gig previews that much any more, mainly because we don’t get out nearly as much as we used to. We’ve got a big feature coming, but it’s taking a little while to get together, so to tide you over until then, here’s a few gigs that have caught our eye over the coming month:
Tomorrow night (Monday 10th July), Bleeding Hearts almost celebrate their fifteen birthday at The Rialto. As they put it: “We’d planned to host an alldayer only to find out that our adversaries had used their telemeters to evil effect. Due to dimentional complications we will not be celebrating the actual anniversary but instead our inability to celebrate our longeveness.”. On the bill are Garden Centre, Academy of the Sun, Gary Goodman and Sam Cutting. Continue reading
