New Videos : Jennifer Left, Fear of Men, Nimmo & The Gauntletts

Here’s a few new videos for you to watch, including two bands who are both playing in town next week. We’ve written about the first two before, but when we did, the videos weren’t ready yet, so here they are now.

First up is Jennifer Left with her new single Black Dog (which we wrote about here). Jennifer is having a single launch at the Blind Tiger on Tuesday, supported by Cate Ferris and The Peppermint Beat Band

We wrote about the new Fear of Men single Green Sea ages ago, and it’s finally released on Monday. Fear of Men are supporting Best Coast on tour at the moment, and they play Coalition on thursday.

Finally we have Nimmo and the Gauntletts, with the lead track from their debut EP Young Light. The EP came out in January, but the video’s only just been made:

new single : Moulettes / Sing Unto Me

Back in April The Moulettes had their single launch at The Marlborough. Two months on, it’s about time they actually released it. Held back by a combination of trying to tie things in with their multitude of festival appearances, and pressing plant delays caused by bank holidays, Sing Unto Me finally hits the shops next monday.

Sing Unto Me is the lead single from the Moulettes new album The Bear’s Revenge. In a bit of a departure from most of their tracks, lead singer Hannah Miller takes on guitar rather than ‘cello duties, but the overall sound is very familiar – tight female harmonies sung in the round, and a folk rhythm section made up of guitar, fiddle, bodhran, and any other bits of percussion that come to hand as well as double bass from Ted Dwane from Mumford and Sons.

Being the generous sorts they are, the single comes with a bumper six tracks – as well as a single edit, there’s a remix, a cover by fellow Brightonians The Muel, and a handful of b-sides including live favourite Are You Going Away To Sea, which is probably the track that made me fall in love with them in the first place.

The band are going to have a very busy summer. If you happen to be at any of the following festivals, I heartily recommend you go and see them:

Brighton act at Number Two in the official singles chart

OK, so musically Conor Maynard doesn’t really fit with the other stuff that we right about here at Brighton Music Blog but the path of music snobbery is one filled with pitfalls. So instead we’ll raise a toast to Conor Maynard, who’s gone straight to number two with his debut single, Can’t Say No. Good work!

New Levellers Single – Truth is

I was wondering when I’d get to write about The Levellers. As out of fashion as they might be, they were probably the first band I acknowledged as being from Brighton, back in my student days when I’d jump up and down at The Event, drunk on watered down Snakebite, to the sounds of One Way.

The new Levellers single, called Truth Is, comes out Saturday 21st April. Most singles normally get released on mondays, but this is coming out on the saturday to coincide with Record Store Day, where their contribution to the many limited items available will be the single released on 7″ red vinyl.

You probably don’t need telling what the Levellers single sounds like – just close your eyes and picture the words “folk rock”.

New videos from Sweet Sweet Lies and The Moulettes

Exciting news this week – new videos from two of my favourite Brighton bands – Sweet Sweet Lies and The Moulettes.

Sweet Sweet Lies’ debut album is out in the spring (and has already had a four star review in Uncut). The lead single is called The Day I Change, and right now, you can only watch the video at NME.com. I’ll update the link once it’s more widely availably, but until then, click though here to take a look.

The Moulettes second album is on it’s way too, and they’ve just released the first taster – a track called Some Who You Love, which you can watch here:

The Beautiful Word video shoot

Last saturday, I got a sneak preview of the new Beautiful Word video being filmed.

The song, Pop It, was recorded as one of a number demos earlier this year, which the band like so much they’ve decided to put it out for everyone to hear.

The video is being made by award winning local videographer Sam Dore, who’s a friend of the band and has used some of their music in shorts that he’s made. Plans are afoot for an album in the future, and they’re making the video now to “keep the momentum up until then and because they’re fun to make”.

In their own words “The whole point of the video, and how it goes with the song – it’s all about not talking about being unhappy, and then you’ve got everyone in the world not talking about being unhappy, and everyone going ‘I’m OK, how are you?’ to each other, and how ridiculous that is, and how it makes me want to blow my head up, and then with the video we thought it would be really cool if there was these five people on their own in totally desolate deserted places – this place is lovely, but an empty venue is quite a sad place – and each of these people is playing their hearts out on their own but they don’t realise they’re all playing the same song.”

The Beautiful Word’s next live gig is this Friday at The Ranelagh, and the video should be out by the end of February.

New videos from Cate Ferris

Cate Ferris has posted up some new videos onto her youtube channel today. They’re both tracks that she’s been playing live this year, so if you’ve caught her playing around town, you’ll know just how good they are. If not, enjoy these for the first time.

A Beautiful Christmas

It’s December now, so we can officially talk about Christmas. So to kick off, a couple of festive bits and pieces from The Beautiful Word. Firstly, they’re hosting a night tomorrow at The Blind Tiger Club. Their Winter Woodland Wonderland kicks off early at 6.30pm (well, it is a sunday night). As with some of their previous gigs, they’re encouraging fancy dress, and the theme is animals and trees. I asked them about this on Twitter (@BeautifulWord, if you’re interested), and they say that they need more trees. If you are thinking about fancy dress, and want to be judged for it (there’s prizes, you know!), then you’ll have to get there between 6.30 and 7. Set times are:

Zoe Konez 6.45pm
Common Tongues 7.30pm
The Beautiful Word 8.15pm
Nimmo and The Gauntletts 9.15pm

As if that wasn’t enough, they’ve also put out a Christmas single – Mirrorball. The video for it is here:

Finally, here’s a few links with more information about sunday night’s gig:

Laish – She is clever

Video

The new video single from Brighton folk band Laish is called She is Clever. It’s really rather good.

The Laish album came out on local Willkommen label earlier this year, and despite a number of very good reviews seems to have gone by largely unnoticed. That’s a shame because it’s really rather brilliant. The lead Laish man Danny Green (the band name translates as ‘Tribe of Dan’) is one of this town’s finest songwriters. He’s now reformed the band, or formed a new one, and is busy recording a second album.

This song’s from that. I can’t wait.

Flash Bang Band / Cupid video

One of the reasons I started this blog was because there was so much music coming from Brighton. And not only was there so much, but a large proportion of it was passing me by. From now on I’ll be giving local bands more of an ear and sharing it with you along the way.

So, only four posts into the blog, a new video from a Brighton Band I hadn’t heard of until tonight, when I saw them being retweeted on Twitter:

They’re on Facebook here, and on Twitter as @FLASHBANGBAND
