About a week ago IYES posted up a short video onto youtube, with the cryptic message “01.05.2013” alongside. What could it all mean? I’m guessing it was a date reference, so maybe all will be revealed on Wednesday…
So former Creation Records label mates Pete Fij (Adorable / Polak) & Terry Bickers (House of Love / Levitation) have been writing songs together for a couple of years now, and finally they’re getting around to release some.
First up is the song Betty Ford about ‘a man brought down by his addiction to heartbreak’. The video is out now – you can see/hear it below – and the single is officially released tomorrow.
They play some laid-back melancholy jive, nothing like the indie pop they were previously known for but full of quiet soul. If you want to check out the new sounds in person, get along to the Sunday Service, upstairs at the Prince Albert in Trafalgar Street on the 28th April. Entry’ll be £5 on the door, or £4 advance. Al Chamberlain is in support.
I can barely keep up with the amount of new Brighton music at the moment. Here’s three videos that have come to our attention this week.
First up is the debut single from Rubylux. The World Goes Quiet is released on 12th May, but the video is doing the rounds already. The anthemic rock single is also the title track from their upcoming album
Speak Galactic‘s album Severed came out last September, but there wasn’t a video for Precautionary Measures which was the single at the time. Owen Thomas has now put together a video for the album’s opening track – Hyss. The track is five minutes of wonky analog prog electronica, and has a video which perfectly matches the song:
I’m going to be writing another blog post about The Levellers in the next day or two, but in the meantime, here’s the video for their new single The Recruiting Sargeant which is out 5th May, with all profits going to the WarChild charity:
It’s not out for another six and a half weeks, but Milk and Biscuits today released the video for their new single Hairstyles. The video is filmed around the streets, shops and parks of Brighton, so chances are you’ll spot somewhere you know.
Hairstyles isn’t a million miles away from last year’s epic single White Noise, although it’s a bit more radio friendly clocking in around three and a half minutes. It’s a very British pop song, not dissimilar to Belle & Sebastian, breezy, carefree and homespun. The single precedes the upcoming album Spirit Nap.
Had the video been up at the weekend, I could have told you about the band’s support slots on tour with British Sea Power this week, but they’re playing their last joint date tonight in Norwich. Tomorrow night Rachel and Eleanor play the Brunswick with their own band Do You Feel What I Feel Deer? supporting Crayola Lectern who’s launching his album.
Black Black Hills are back, this time with a fantastic slice of reverb drenched rock’n’roll, and a crazy, crazy backwards video:

Tigercub have given us a heads up of their new video for Little Rope. Probably not one for the epileptics, the video is rammed with effects. They call their sound post-grunge, but there’s definitely a hint of glam stomp in there.
There’s a distinct lack of release info around Little Rope, and a bit of digging tells us that’s because it’s already out – it featured on the Sea Monsters 3 compilation put out by One Inch Badge earlier this year to go with the festival.
We haven’t stopped listening to the new Curxes single since we downloaded it nearly a fortnight. Now the duo have put up the accompanying video. I’ll let you watch the video to see the whole story, but the tag line put out with it reads “A lone taxidermist sets out to work on his most ambitious project yet”…

About a month ago, we brought you news of the upcoming Us Baby Bear Bones EP, due on 10th of June. Today the band put up a new taster of what we’ve got to look forward to on What Starts with a U, Ends with an I. Mountains is less than three minutes of hypnotic swirling dream pop, with a video to match. We love it.
On top of that, UBBB are giving away You (which is going to be on the EP, and whose video was on our the post we mentioned earlier) as a free download. Brilliant!
It’s been a while since we’ve done a round up of some of the latest videos we’ve spotted, so here’s a few to watch on this chilly Sunday night.
First up is Nimmo and the Gauntletts new single Change. The video was directed by Agyness Deyn, more well known for being in front of the camera than behind it. Agyness played the track on 6Music, and the band tweeted her asking her to appear their next video. She went one better and directed the video for them!
Then we have The Beautiful Word, who’ve just headed out on tour. They’re playing Brighton on Thursday night at The Hope. This is the animated video for their track May Not Be Love, which will be on their album Particles which is coming out later this year.
Here’s the video for Debbie Does Drugs by The Bobby McGees. This is one of the tracks from their upcoming album Je Vien Rechcher Mes, and is an opportunity to see Jimmy McGee without his trademark beard!
Next up Monsters Build Mean Robots with the video for their new track A Town Called Tourettes:
Professor Elemental‘s new single is called This is My Horse (show me yours). You can buy it over on his bandcamp page, and watch the video here:
British Sea Power‘s new album Machineries of Joy is out a week tomorrow (1st April). Before that they’re playing a sold out show at the Old Market, and have released a video for the title track:
Finally, here’s a video from the Nordic Giants gig at the Pavilion Theatre last month. This is Glass Skinned Girl, which is the b-side to the band’s new single Speed The Crow’s nest. Nordic Giants are playing up in London next month, and there’s still one or two tickets for the early show (which you can buy here).
