Gazelle Twin – Antibody / Live at the Green Door Store supported by Eva Bowan

Gazelle Twin releases her new Antibody EP digitally on Anti-Ghost Moon Ray today, followed a physical release on limited blue 12″ on 16th June. Antibody comes backed with remixes from Wrangler and I Speak Machine as well as new b-side Phobia, and can be pre-ordered from iTunes here.. Antibody will appear on Gazelle Twin’s upcoming album Unflesh, due later this year.

To celebrate the launch Gazelle Twin played a gig at the Green Door Store last thursday, supported by Eva Bowan, and we were there to capture it:

RIP Us Baby Bear Bones

It’s been a bit quiet from us for a little while, for which we apologise profusely. It’s all the Great Escape’s fault. As fun as it is, it does leave us with no spare time for three days, then knackered for a few days after that.

We’re back now though and unfortunately it’s with some sad news. Last week we got a press release saying that one of Brighton’s finest bands – Us Baby Bear Bones – were splitting up. They’re releasing a second and final EP, Ursari, which has been produced by Blood Red Shoes’ Simon Ansell which is coming out tomorrow on Love They Neighbour, limited to only a hundred copies, and also playing one final gig at the Green Door Store, with support from Hypnotized and Speak Galactic. Here’s the video for Only One from the EP:

Don’t be sad for too long though. Two of the band’s members are continuing as Psalm Springs, and their first track Get Out (Leave) is already out there, tucked away on Cupboard Music’s sampler cd that they gave away to those who made the early start on Record Store Day, which isn’t too difficult to find a stream of with a little bit of hunting. If Psalm Springs are even half the band that Us Baby Bear Bones were they’ll still outshine most of what Brighton has to offer so we look forward to hearing more from them.

If you’re brave enough to leave the house without fear of being blown away or drowned, here’s our gig picks for this week:

BBTonight two local acts are supporting Basia Bulat at The Hope. You can catch Bella Spinks and Heliopause on Queens Road from 8pm. Meanwhile Audiobeach Studios celebrate their fourth birthday with a showcase at Sticky Mike’s with sets from BirdEatsBaby, Nylon Sky, Echo & the Beats and Departure from Normal.

Friday Night is Valentines day, and The Valentines are playing their last ever gig at the Prince Albert, with support from Fire Eyes and Dirt Royal. You can also catch Normanton Street over at the Green Door Store.

 

derriereOur pick for Saturday night is also two local acts supporting a touring band – Ez Stone and Ellie Ford are on the bill with Lily & Madeleine at Sticky Mike’s. We also like the look of Derriere who are playing at the Blind Tiger.

Gigs of the Week

In an effort to be a little more on the ball than last week we’re posting up our Gigs of the week on Monday night. As it happens, we need to this week because there’s a lot of great gigs to mention, a few of which have already cropped up in these pages.

SC.We posted up about BirdEngine supporting Samantha Crain over the weekend. That’s happening on Tuesday night at the Komedia, and we’ll be along to cover that.

On Wednesday night, Metronomy play a one off date at The Old Market to warm up for their European tour taking place in March. Their new single is the title track from forthcoming album Love Letters is out on 11th March, and has a video directed by Michel Gondry.

Talking of new singles, Fickle Friends are holding a launch party for their debut single Swim at the Green Door Store on Thursday night. There’s a remix of Swim which we’re going to be sharing with you very soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

mbThere’s two gigs on Friday night that we’d be seen at (and hopefully with a bit of planning we will be spending a bit of time at both). Milk & Biscuits gig at the Green Door Store has been in our diary for a while. They’ll be supported by labelmates Octopuses and Prince Vaseline. Meanwhile down at the Blind Tiger it’s the first Les Enfants Terribles of the new year and it’s got a slightly different format for 2014. The night will run from 9pm-2am and now has DJs as well as local bands. This month Transformer, Dog in the Snow, Normanton Street and NYX all play live.

momotaroLast, but by no means least, on Saturday night Momotaro are holding their album launch Second Side at the Green Door Store. The band gave us a copy of the album when we interviewed them last week and it hasn’t left our stereo. See you down the front, and maybe at the afterparty at the Eddy.

Gigs of the Week

In a bit of our change to our weekly gig round up, which used to just focus on what was going to be happening at the weekend, from 2014 we’ll be looking at what’s going on for the whole week. We always played a little bit fast and loose with the concept of weekend, always starting on Thursdays (and even Wednesdays on some occasions), but inevitably there would be the odd gig that would slip through the net.

1425267_10202742176698581_851778223_oAs it happens, our first post in the new format is starting with a recommendation for thursday night – Luo, Kudu Blue and Fools Empire at playing at the Green Door Store in a fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support. Four pound on the door goes to the charity.

Meanwhile, over at the Hope, Demob Happy headline a not-so-late-night Late Night Lingerie, with a couple of French bands also on the bill.

On Friday Night, Late Night Lingerie regulars Spit Shake Sisters are playing a free gig at the Blind Tiger, with Broadbay in support.Meanwhile, over at Hotel Pelirocco Japanese Sweets headline Synthesize Me. While the name Japanese Sweets may not be familiar, you’ll have probably read one of our many posts about Speak Galactic, which is one of Owen Thomas’ other projects.

At Sticky Mike’s, their regular Brighton Rock nights are back, with Dizzy Tales, The Evil Son, Saint Elmo and Mude this week.

Our last pick of the week is Almighty Planets who are hosting monthly nights at the Blind Tiger. Amongst the supports are Brighton’s Normanton Street.

Weekend Gig Picks

Things on the gig front in Brighton are still rather quiet, so this weekend’s gig post isn’t quite the usual bumper affair.

There are a couple of gigs which have caught our eye – Carnival Collective at the Blind Tiger on Friday Night, and Chris T-T at Bermuda Triangle on Saturday Night – but the one thing that we really really like the look of this weekend was Green Door Store’s Third Birthday. Has it really been three years? They’ve got five bands playing on Friday Night, two of which are local talent. Slum of Legs (on at 10pm) and Theo Verney (on at 12:15) join three London bands and a whole host of DJs who have hosted club nights there. The fun kicks off at 9pm, and it’s all free.

Weekend Gig Picks

As Christmas approaches, we haven’t got quite so many acts in our weekly roundup of the local gigs we’ve picked out, but it’s all about quality rather than quantity.

Before I mention any other gigs this weekend, I want to give a special mention to a charity gig that’s taking place on Sunday afternoon / evening at the Above Audio, put on by Les Enfants Terribles in aid of the Typhoon Haiyan Relief Project, supporting those affected by the recent catastrophic weather in the Philippines. They’ve got a great line up, including The Miserable Rich (who are re-forming as a one off for this gig), The Phantom Runners, Spit Shake Sisters, Common Tongues, Lost Dog and Will Musset. There’ll also be a raffle and mince pie sale to raise more money for a deserving cause.

Anyway, back to tonight’s gig recommendation –  A Lily (who appeared in our Advent Calendar last week) are supporting Farao and Asgeir at the Green Door Store.

Friday Night sees one of Brighton’s hottest tipped bands play at Bermuda Triangle. Royal Blood have been tipped as one of the BBC’s sound of 2014 bands, and are playing what’s bound to be a sold out gig supported by Tigercub.

1461085_396750197122559_1663366901_nEz Stone launches his Moroccan Whiskey EP at the Red Roaster coffee shop on Saturday night, and is joined by Your Correspondent, Bella Spinks and Sam Jordan. Elsewhere, Kill Moon are headlining this month’s Drugs at the Green Door Store, alongside Dead Man’s Hand, The Harbour and Frankie & The Teardrops.

The big gig of the weekend however is Fatboy Slim, who’ll be playing to a packed room at Digital. It’s rare to see Norman Cook play a venue this small these days, and I’m a bit jealous of anyone who’s got a ticket!

Normally December is a quiet time for music, but once again Brighton is doing us all proud by being as busy as ever. Here’s our picks of the best of the local live music this weekend:

GAPSOn Thursday Night, GAPS launch their new single I Know It’s You with a gig at the Green Door Store. Support comes from Foreign Skin and Eagles for Hands. Thursday is also December’s Source New Music at the Dome Studio Theatre, headlined this month by Rum Committee, with Mok, Neon Saints Brass Band and Barcode also on the bill. Meanwhile, over at the Brunswick Tim Keegan & The Quiet Lifers are playing at the Brunswick. They’ll be previewing tracks from their forthcoming album The Long Game, as well as other material from their back catalogue, a tribute to Lou Reed and maybe something a little more festive. As if that wasn’t enough, at the Blind Tiger there’s a Beatabet takeover with Le Juki, Bryony Bird and Collectress.

ESPFriday night sees The Electric Soft Parade play their Christmas Show at the Unitarian Church. The band will be playing two sets – an acoustic Electric Soft Parade set of rarities and covers, and an second set of Christmas songs with an expanded band. There’s promise of mince pies and mulled wine too. Normanton Street and Phoebe Freya are launching their new single at the Green Door Store, and carrying on with an afterparty at Brighton Arts Club after 11. Support at the Green Door Store comes from Alice Amelia, The Remedy and The White Bicycles. As if that wasn’t enough for Friday Night, Hypnotised are supporting the Godspeed / Silver Mount Zion side project Esmerine at Saint George’s Church.

There’s plenty to choose from on Saturday too – Eliza Jaye is playing at the Ranelagh, House of Hats, Jacko Hooper and Fiddes Smith are at the Brunswick, and Two Jackals are at Coalition. Finally, on Sunday, Sealings play at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, supported by Shudder Pulps, Keel Her and Witching Waves.

In the meantime, we’re off to see Lion Bark at the Hope tonight.
