Dog in the Snow – Africa

“Africa Live Video” said link in the email we got about Dog in the Snow’s new update. We don’t really do live video on the blog, but we clicked through anyway since we’ve loved everything that Dog in the Snow have done so far. We shouldn’t have been worried – the only hint that it might be a live video is the slightest smattering of clapping as the video fades in and out. Outside of that it could be a studio performance it’s so flawless. The videography utilises double exposures and never shows the audience, but it turns out that it is a genuine live video, shot at the Hoxton Bar and Grill last May. Africa is sparse but melodic, somewhere between folk and pop yet at the same time something all of it’s very own. Take a look below.

New Music – New Union, Devil in Detail, Rizzle Kicks

We’ve got three new tracks for you this week, from the smallest to the biggest of Brighton bands.

Devil in Detail have only just released their hard rocking debut EP. Point Scoring is the lead track:

The New Union released their eponymous EP back in June and have just released a video for the quiet piano track. This is Forget Again:

Brighton’s biggest band of the past few years are back. Rizzle Kicks return with Lost Generation, and a video sponsored by O2. When did videos start to get sponsored?

Abi Wade – The Boxer

We’ve had news in this week about the new Abi Wade single. The Boxer was  produced by Daniel Copeman of Esben and The Witch, with a video made by Brighton’s Create Studios:

As with her previous releases the track is centred around Abi’s haunting vocals and cello, but instead of percussion coming from the noises made between her instrument and her bow, The Boxer introduces programmed beats giving a much fuller sound than before.

The Boxer gets a digital release on 15th July on Love Thy Neighbour.

Maker video and REDS album

Two quick things we didn’t get around to mentioning this week.

First off the new single ‘Devotion’ from Maker is really something special. Probably more pop than their tougher live rock sound, it’s a stunningly executed slice of sexy pop-rock and will hopefully bring this band more of the attention they deserve. There’s a NSFW video too

And the amorphous psych-rock improvisation collective REDS have released a limited edition  CD, which collects together a number of tracks that add to their reverberating and impressive live sound. You can hear it below and buy it over at bandcamp

Today’s new singles : The New Union / The New Union EP and Milk & Biscuits / Hairstyles

Today sees releases from two of our favourite bands at Brighton Music Blog. We’ve featured videos from both releases on the blog before, but these have appeared online so far before the release date that it’s worth reminding people about these again now that you can go and actually buy them.

The New Union

The first is The New Union EP, by The New Union, on Two Sisters Records. The EP features four tracks – Staying Friends, Rushing Thoughts, Where Do You Think You’re Going Wrong and Forget Again – and is out now on iTunes, or on 12″ from the likes of Resident Records. The band are holding the single launch at the Book Club in London on Thursday for this release, but you’ll be able to catch them in Brighton again soon supporting IYES on 24th July at The Hope. Get your tickets early for this gig, because with a line up like that, it WILL sell out. Hopefully we’ll have an interview with the band to share with you before then.

Hairstyles1

Today’s other release is Hairstyles by Milk & Biscuits. Hairstyles is released on Big Salad Records, and is download only, available through iTunes (and probably some other places, although when this was written details weren’t confirmed). Milk & Biscuits play next Brighton gig is on 22nd June at the West Hill Centre.

New Videos : British Sea Power, Crayola Lectern, Flash Bang Band, Self Help Group

Here’s four new videos that we’ve come across this week.

First is British Sea Power with a video for Hail Holy Queen. The track isn’t the new single (that’s going to be Loving Animals), but the band made a video for this anyway:

Then we have the beautifully shot Slow Down by Crayola Lectern. We love the album, and Slow Down appeared in our April Top Ten post, so it’s no surpise that we’re giving it another mention.

Next is the new Flash Bang Band single, If You’re Driving. The single is out digitally on 3rd June, and the band next play in Brighton at the Blind Tiger on 9th June at the Root Experience’s Games Fete.

Finally we have the utterly chaming new video from The Self Help Group. The Rapture was filmed around Brighton (see how many locations you can spot!), and is out now on iTunes.

New videos from The Beautiful Word and Jacko Hooper

After a few days break for the bank holiday weekend, it’s back to the blog. Today we’ve got a couple of videos for you:

First up is The Beautiful Word’s new single Particles. The video’s out now, but the launch party is going to be on 3rd of June. More details as we get them. The song’s a lot more pop and a lot less twee than we’re used to from the Beautiful Word. It’s still unmistakeably them – it wouldn’t be a Beautiful Word track without Emily and Megan’s lovely close harmonies – but this could well be the best thing they’ve done.

We’ve also got the latest upload from Jacko Hooper,  a very smooth, very classy cover of Fly Me To The Moon. He’s got another new track being uploaded soon, but until then, we’re  more than happy with this. Jacko will be playing at the Great Escape Aftershow Party at Brighton Electric, alongside Dog in the Snow, The Hundredth Anniversary, Us Bear Baby Bones, AK/DK and Spacenoid.

IYES – Daddy

Brighton Music Blog favourites IYES have posted a new track online, which shows a new side to the band. Daddy is a seven minute long house number, which is a little bit baggy and a little bit balearic. It’s stripped of the vocals which characterised Lighthouse and Glow, but the one thing it has in common with the previous two tracks, one of the things that strikes you is how good it sounds. There’s something really clever going on with reverb and stereo, but don’t go overthinking about it, just enjoy it. You can hear it online by watching the youtube video above, or you can get a free download to listen whenever you like by signing up to their mailing list.

Anneka – Deliver video

We don’t get to write about Anneka nearly enough on the blog, so we were pleased when an email dropped into inbox earlier today telling us about a new track of hers that has been posted.

Deliver was recorded at Brighton Electric, and features a lot less beats than those who’ve seen her live might expect, although it feels like it might burst into a huge dancefloor track at any point. The backbone of the track is what sounds like a looped vocal sample, but is actually played live on pads. I’ve compared Anneka to Bjork before, and Deliver is another track worthy of that comparison, sounding like it wouldn’t be out of place amongst some of the more experimental tracks from the Post era. We love it!
