Another week, another round of up new music for you all. First up is Laser Beam, the new single from Phantom Runners, which came from their sessions with Huey Morgan.

Last week Fear of Men posted up a video for their track America, from their album Loom, suitably filmed while they were on tour in America:

Lonely in Paradise is only the second track that I am L has put out there, but musically it sounds incredibly established, a bombastic ballad with Florence & The Machine style elements.

Seadog have a new EP out on Bleeding Hearts Recordings. Transmitter is the first track and also the name of the five track EP. The EP is out now as a download on bandcamp, with a 10″ coming in the spring.

We posted about the new The Go! Team track The Scene Between recently, but this week the video hit the internet. In Ian Parton’s own words “[I was] imagining things like aerial fly-bys, bad chromakey, Waco cable access, country versus the city, a choir in the wilderness. The key thing was I was definitely imagining looking down on landscapes, rivers and forests, but I could hear a slightly menacing, kind of pagan, thing going on too and a definite schizo thing between the verse and the chorus.”

Memory Loop have collaborated with Eva Bowan on a piece of electronica called 5115. Things start out quite ambient, but around the halfway mark the skittering beats kick in.

Around this time last year The Hundredth Anniversary did a session for indie website Daytrotter. You have to sign up to their website to listen to the sessions, but the band have put up Caroline from the session up as a free download on their soundcloud page:

ARC have just put out their debut EP Dopamine. Dopamine is track two EP, with track one being the jauntier 1664 Water, which we’re hoping is an ode to Kronenbourg.

Last but by no means least is some new music from Nightkites who put out a great EP last year called Drones. They’re back with another EP, this time called Drones 2, which is also a free download over on Soundcloud. Here’s track three – Dusk:

Brighton Music Blog End of Year Top Twenty, 2 – Fear of Men / Loom

With the release of the first proper debut album (last year’s Early Fragments discounted because it was just a collection of singles), Fear of Men have finally come of age. As you would expect Loom has an abundance of cultural references set to classic indie pop, bookended with intimate vulnerability but packed with strength inbetween. The album got great reviews across the board – NME gave it 8/10, and The Line of Best Fit 9/10 – which scored the band a tour support with Pains of Being Pure at Heart giving them a ready built audience all across America and Europe before they returned to play their own headline homecoming show at The Hope in September. Fear of Men are already working on demos for their next album which we can’t wait to hear.

September Top Ten

September was yet another great month for Brighton Music. We’ve barely kept up with posting the new music that we’ve heard throughout the month, but these have been our favourites:

1 GAPS & Maya Jane Coles – In Dark In Day

GAPS collaboration EP with Maya Jane Coles was an easy choice for our number one spot this month. We were fans of GAPS before this release, and In Dark In Day made us love them even more.

2 Gazelle Twin – Belly of the Beast

Live show of the month had to be Gazelle Twin’s headline post at last week’s Spectrum night at the Dome Studio Theatre. The tracksuit and obscured face was the perfect visual representation of her leftfield claustrophobic electronica. We could have chosen any track from her new album Unflesh, but we’ve gone for Belly of the Beast.

3 Cate Ferris – Giants

Giants has been a staple of Cate’s live sets for quite a while, so we were pleased to hear it get released on her new EP Disappear. It’s even better live – if you’re about this weekend get down to the Level where Cate is headlining the Lantern Fayre around 8-8.30ish on saturday night.

4 Dog in the Snow – Africa

Helen Ganya Brown’s latest single is another great slice of art pop which, too, has been a staple of her live sets over the last year.

5 Momotaro – Kite

If we could have, we’d have put the Deep Blast & Ricco Remix of Kite into our top ten tunes for you to listen to this month, but since it’s not streaming anywhere online, here’s the standard single version

6 Fear of Men – Tephra

2014 has been a good year for Fear of Men – support slots with Pains of Being Pure at Heart across the US and Europe, an album with great reviews across the board, a headline UK tour of their own, and to top it all their latest video premiered on the NME website.

7 Oslo Parks – Twin

As debut singles go, you couldn’t ask for better than Twin. We’re looking forward to heading down to the Green Door Store for the launch tomorrow night (Thursday 2nd October).

8 Heliopause – I seem too cold (Faulty Remix)

Heliopause’s latest offering is a beautiful, blissed out, exotic rework of an older track, put out to celebrate Brighton Digital Festival.

9 Troves – Afterthought

Afterthought is another debut single from another new Brighton band, and coincidentally, Troves are the support to Oslo Park’s gig on thursday.

10 Phantom Runners – On The Run

Finally, we have On The Run, the new Huey Morgan produced single from Phantom Runners, with it’s video filmed partly at Brighton Arts Club.

Fear of Men and The Hundredth Anniversary at The Hope

On Thursday Fear of Men kicked off their first headline tour of the UK, which is also the last round of promotion for their album Loom. Last week they also put out a video for album track Tephra, directed by the band themselves, which shows the effigy created for the front cover of Loom being burned to ash, also marking the end the band’s links to the album. The band have already played Norwich last night and are also taking in Leeds and Manchester this weekend, with the tour concluding in London at Concrete on 2nd October.

Gigs of the Week

There’s an excellent week of gigs ahead in Brighton with some of the best local bands gracing some of our stages, and we wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t give you a heads up about them.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) Cate Ferris launches her new EP at Latest Music Bar. Disappear was crowdfunded (with pledgers already having received their downloads), and now the EP is getting a full release. Support comes from Moughrabi and Bird.

Dog in the Snow’s new single Africa is out today, but the launch party is at the Green Door Store on Wednesday. Also on the bill are Brighton Music Blog favourites Momotaro and Winston & Goldstein.

Fear of Men kick off their first headline tour this week with a hometown gig at The Hope on Thursday. To mark they event, the band have put up a new cover onto Soundcloud, of Ty Segall’s Sleeper. Get there early and you can also catch The Hundredth Anniversary who are opening the evening’s proceedings.

Friday night is the next Spectrum event, run as a partnership between Brighton Dome and Resident. This month’s night is headlined by Gazelle Twin, whose new album Unflesh is released today. The whole night is being billed as an Anti Ghost Moon Ray showcase and Gazelle twin is being joined by her labelmates Bernholz and Great Pagans.

Finally, on Saturday Lutine play a show at St Laurence Church in Falmer village. Lutine’s debut album White Flowers was recorded at the church and is released on Monday 29th September. Support comes from Bela Emerson.

This weekend we’ve been out at the Green Door Store’s now annual 234 Festival. For the sake of our livers, we didn’t stay for the whole weekend, but we did manage to catch a whole load of Brighton bands. Weekend Gig Pick – 234 Festival at Green Door Store

Our regular Weekend Gig Pick post isn’t quite so regular these days, but when there’s something we feel you really must see we’ll make sure we tell you about it.

This weekend the Green Door Store are holding their second annual 234 mini-festival, with a mixture of talent from in and out of town playing over the course of the weekend. This year it’s moved from the first weekend in August to the Bank Holiday weekend to avoid clashing with Pride, but it’s still free to see the fantastic line up they’re putting on.

The music starts at 2pm on Saturday with an opening set from Grasshopper, and is followed by a host of Brighton bands who’ve graced our posts (and a number who haven’t yet). Keep an eye out on Saturday for The Hundredth Anniversary, Adolescent, Tyrannosaurus Dead, Demob Happy and Fear of Men.

Sunday hosts more of the out of town acts, but kicks off with the local post-folk act Rainslicker. Highlights for us on Sunday are Skirts, Winston & Goldstein and Spit Shake Sisters.

Fear of Men tour news

Fresh from spending most of this year touring with Pains of being Pure at Heart, Fear of Men today announced their first headline tour of the UK. It doesn’t kick off until September because the band already have their summer filled up with festival dates, and the first night of the tour is a hometown gig at The Hope – which I’m sure the band could sell out many times over, so get in early buying a ticket. The full list of tour dates is:

25th September – The Hope, Brighton
26th September – Epic Studios, Norwich
27th September – Brudenell Games Room, Leeds
28th September – The Castle, Manchester
30th September – The Bull’s Head, Birmingham
1st October – Start the Bus, Bristol

June Top Ten

Slightly delayed since we’ve been on holiday, here’s out top ten tunes from June:

1 Fear of Men – Descent

Descent is the second single taken from Fear of Men’s fantastic debut album Loom. The band have spent the past few months supporting Pains of Being Pure at Heart across the US and Europe. The tour’s now over, so hopefully they’re taking a well earned rest before playing a few festival dates over the summer, including Green Door Store’s 234 festival taking place over the August Bank Holiday Weekend.

2 Anushka – Mansions

Mansions is taken from Anushka’s brand new album Broken Circuit, out now on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings label. It’s good, but play it loud and it’s even better.

3 Jacko Hooper – Egg Shells

Because we’ve been away we missed the launch party for Jacko Hooper’s new For You EP, which took place last week at the Green Door Store. The EP is out now on One Inch Badge’s record label.

4 Palm Springs – Seal My Fate

Seal My Fate is one of those slow burners which has got under our skin a little bit more every time we’ve played it. It’s out now on 7″ on Random Acts of Vinyl

5 Alex Banks – All You Can Do

The whole of Alex Banks’ new album Illuminate but we’ve decided to put the Gazelle Twin collaboration All You Can Do into our top ten.

6 Moulettes – So It Goes

To promote their new album Constellations, Moulettes put out a double A-side single, with Lady Vengeance backed with So It Goes which we’ve featured.

7 Bunty – We Are Here

We Are Here is the new single from the ever-creative Bunty, launched at last month’s Spectrum night at the Dome Studio Theatre.

8 Black Honey – Sleep Forever

Black Honey are the latest band to have a single put out by Duly Noted Records, which have put out previous releases by IYES and Fickle Friends. In a change of style for the label, Sleep Forever’s backing isn’t electronica but lush reverb drenched guitars.

9 The Mojo Fins – Longwave Reach

Longwave Reach is the latest single from The Mojo Fins brand new album Circa, which has been getting plenty of plays at Brighton Music Blog towers.

10 Faux Flux – You Know

Fuax Flux came out with another new track in June, the summery You Know.

We seem to be chasing our tail with new music again – this week we’ve got absolutely loads again for you up with more from Fear of Men (who appeared in the last new music roundup we did with their French version of Luna), Bentcousin, Fujiya & Miyagi, Moulettes, Hundredth Anniversary and many, many more:

First up is the video for Fear of Men‘s new single Descent, directed by Eleanor Hardwick, who also directed the video for Dog in the Snow’s last single Factory.

Fujiya & Miyagi have put out a video for the lead track from their new album Artificial Sweeteners. The band are currently off touring the new album and have taken AK/DK along as support.

Palm Springs new single Seal My Fate is out now on Hove’s Random Acts of Vinyl label on 7″ and download, and also has this rather tasty black and white video:

FEVRS (pronounced “Fears” – the V is actually an upsidedown A) put out their debut EP on Everything is Chemical earlier this month. Here’s the first track, the ambient electronic Sirens / Control

Mother of Billions are a new London / Brighton based pop duo who are putting out their debut single Universe on 10th July. The launch party for the single takes place at The Hope on 11th July.

We’re gutted that we missed Bunty‘s single launch which took place at the Spectrum night at the Dome last Friday. The summery We Are Here is out now:

Egg Shells is the lead track from Jacko Hooper‘s upcoming For You EP, which had a very successful pledge campaign last year. The EP comes out on 30th June on One Inch Badge’s imprint:

Boon Magazine put out a 12″ Record to coincide with their last print issue. Here’s The Hundredth Anniversary‘s contribution, a slow brooding number called Stretched Lungs

Water Canvas are a new Brighton based rock band. You can grab their new At Least EP at bandcamp or take a listen to lead track Memorial Drive here:

The brand new Rooster Cole track Up To The Teeth only appeared on Soundcloud this afternoon. We don’t know much about it, but we like it!

Something else only uploaded today is the video to Moulettes new single. So It Goes is out today and is backed by an edit of Lady Vengeance which we’ve previously featured.

Bentcousin had an early demo of Dizzy up on Soundcloud last year, but that got taken down a long time ago. Since then they’ve rerecorded their ode to Brighton Summers for a full release on Team Love records on 1st July:

Adolescent have a video for another track from last month’s Golden Halls EP. The video for Hangshai is a digital animation which matches the music it accompanies:

Finally we have another remix from IYES, who have mixed up Brooklyn’s Paperwhite, making their track Magic sound much much cooler than the original
