Weekend Gig Picks

Just a very quick round up of this weekend’s gigs for you all, since we’re off out to see some live music tonight ourselves.

On Friday night Audio celebrate their ninth birthday. That makes us feel very old indeed. There’s a big club night take place after 10pm, but a gig with local bands before then starting from seven, put on by our friends at Les Enfants Terribles, with Curxes, King Dinosaur and Alphabets Heaven playing. We also spotted that this week’s Brighton Rocks at Sticky Mikes with Alice Amelia, Faux Flux and Lu’Ami.

Saturday sees Brighton Music Blog favourites Bent Cousin are headlining at Prince Albert, which should be good. Elsewhere, Mok and Tiny Dragons play The Haunt, and Crayola Lectern is supporting William Drake at the Komedia.

Our recommendation for Sunday night is Flash Bang Band’s album launch at the Green Door Store. Support comes from P for Persia and Clowns – there’s three great bands to see for free. We’ll have an interview with Andy from Flash Bang Band going up very soon, so look out for that.

Weekend Gig Picks

It’s that time of week again where wish dish out our recommendations for the best Brighton bands playing around town this weekend. You might not be at Glastonbury, but that’s no reason to miss out on live music.

Our picks for Friday night are the Les Enfants Terribles and Brighton Rocks nights. Les Enfants Terribles is at the Blind Tiger, and has Kill moon, Phantom Runners and The Semper Teens on the bill. Brighton Rocks is at Sticky Mikes and sees The Repeat Prescriptions, Midnight Wire, Karlek and Victims Athletic playing.

There’s loads of good stuff on Saturday too, starting in the afternoon. There’s a twelve hour surf rock all dayer on at the Green Door store, kicking off at 4pm and going on until 4am, with The Space Agency playing at some point, as well as loads of DJs and a few other bands from out of town. It’s also The Open House Pub’s Cider Festival, which has Jennifer Left and Jacko Hooper playing live. Finally Champione have their EP launch at a late night gig at Sticky Mike’s from 11pm.

Weekend gig picks

We missed a round of gig picks last week because of holidays (ours, not bands playing in Brighton), but we’re back this week. The weather is getting warm enough that you can’t use it as an excuse for not leaving the house any more, so here’s what we recommend when you do get out.

On Thursday night Amy Hill – who hosts the long running Brighton Folk night – launches her album Place of Mind at the Brunswick. Support comes from Jacko Hooper, which should be good.

Friday night see’s the latest Brighton Rocks night at Sticky Mike’s headlined by Devil in Detail. We’re going to be heading out of Brighton to the Con Club in Lewes where Clowns are playing.

Saturday night’s big gig is Pere Ubu at the Haunt, put on by Melting Vinyl. While they might not be thought of as a local band, their legendary lynchpin David Thomas is a Brightonian these days, so the date on their tour to support new album The Lady From Shanghai is something of a homecoming.

Here’s our regular pick of where to go and get your fill of local music this weekend.

Tonight we recommend heading to The Brunswick to see some members of bands playing solo sets. Hannah from Moulettes is supporting Sam Walker from The Muel, and door tax is a fiver. If Hove seems a long way away (which it does sometimes), then there’s also Flash Bang Band at the Prince Albert, which is only four pound entrance. Support comes from Lion Bark and The Vinyls.

Our Friday night choice is Transformer, who are playing at the Blind Tiger and is free to get in! Saturday night’s pick is this week’s Brighton Rocks at Sticky Mikes with Running Dogs, The Chances, High Tyde, Clipper and Harting, and will set you back four pounds.

Weekend Gig Picks

Our regular Weekend Gigs feature is back after a bit of a Christmas break. If you’re willing to brave the cold (and the snow if weather reports are to be believed), here’s what we’d recommend

Tonight’s recommendation is a new night called Night Sweats. “But Brighton Music Blog” I hear you cry, “it’s gone seven o clock, I should have made plans already”. Aha, but Night Sweats doesn’t start until 9pm. It’s a new night for people who want to stay out a bit later, and who don’t have to worry about work in the morning. It’s headlined by Elle Kaye who are onstage at 12:15. Support comes from Rosales, Saint Savanna and Classic Plastic. More info over on Facebook.

Friday night we’re recommending a gig just outside of Brighton, but it’s close enough that we’ll let them off. Derriere haven’t played a local gig for a while, so to make up for it they’re playing two sets at their gig. They’ll be raising the roof at the Ropetackle centre in Shoreham from 8pm. Our Top Tip for Saturday is Fragile Creatures at Green Door Store, but we’ve also spotted the latest Brighton Rocks night headlined by Forestears at Sticky Mikes, and Nick Williams at the Prince Albert

Then Sunday our advice is a gig that you can’t buy a ticket for. Esben & The Witch are launching their fantastic new album “Wash The Sins Not Only The Face” (review coming soon!) at the Green Door Stoor, and the only way to get in is to pre-order the album, which is out next monday, from Resident.

Fancy going to see a Brighton band this weekend? Here’s who we recommend:

brighton-rocks-23-online-18183 Our pick for Friday is Lout’s regular Brighton Rocks night. This week The Witches, Fragile Creatures, Little Shocks, and Bliss are on the bill at Sticky Mikes. The BIG gig in town is Rizzle Kicks at the Brighton Centre. Apparently that starts at 6.30, and I’m sure most of their audience probably need to get to bed early, so if you were keen you could probably get to both! 😉

riots not diets shrag

Our choice for Saturday is the Riots not Diets Christmas Party at the West Hill, headlined by Shrag. There’s support from Cosines, Bad Librarians and Fulhast, as well as a film about post-punk girl group Dolly Mixture. You can pick up a ticket for six quid from Resident.

Action Beat aren’t from Brighton, but Speak Galactic and P for Persia who are supporting them at the Prince Albert are. Also, Luke Sital Singh is on at the Hope – probably your last chance to see him anywhere so small, so don’t miss out!

Brighton Rocks

This isn’t a blog post about Graham Greene’s novel, or either of the films made about it. Nor is it a post about the bar in Kemptown. Brighton Rocks in this case refers to a series of gigs put on by Lout Promotions, featuring exclusively local bands.

In the early days of Lout, they put on all-dayers at the Concorde featuring the likes of British Sea Power, Electric Soft Parade, and Eighties Matchbox B-Line disaster, and now they’re reviving the concept. They’re all going to be on friday or saturday nights – so no moaning about work the following day, and instead of the Concorde, they’ll be at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar.

One great thing for bands is that Lout are open to the idea of curated nights, so a band could put together their own bill, for a single launch or label showcase.

The first night is next friday (3rd August – Facebook event here), headlined by Run Young Lovers, and there are another half a dozen lined up already. If you want to get involved, drop a mail to info@loutpromotions.co.uk.
