Weekend Gig Picks

We’re out of town for the weekend, but that’s not going to stop us telling you about the great music that’s on. In fact, we’re going to bring our normal timings a day earlier and start the post off from bands playing Wednesday night, since there’s some great gigs going on then that we’re gutted we’re going to miss out on.

Octopuses, Becky Becky and Do You Feel What I Feel Deer? are all on the bill at the Prince Albert on Wednesday night for the launch of Octopuses new single Sarcastic. At the Blind Tiger you can see Faux Flux, Luo and Spacenoid, and you can see The Beautiful Word at Northern Lights.

Skipping to Friday Night, Eliza Jaye holds her album launch at the Ranelagh, and at the Blind Tiger there’s this month’s Les Enfants Terribles, featuring Bad for Lazarus, Fox in the City and The Frenzied Anaesthetist. Unfortunately Fear of Men supporting Youth Lagoon has been rescheduled so if you were hoping to see them you’ll have to wait until October.

We’ve already mentioned Saturday night RSPB Fundraiser at Saint Luke’s Church with Mary Hampton and Do You Feel What I Feel Deer? Saturday is also this month’s Source New Music at the Dome Studio Theatre – Flash Bang Band headline, with support from 900 Spaces, Hundredth Anniversary and The Victory Dolls. Meanwhile, at the Green Door Store Gnarwolves host the launch party for their new EP Funemployed.

It’s that time of week where we steer you towards the gigs we like the look of over the weekend. The weather forecast is looking fantastic this weekend so we’ve made sure that there’s some outdoor fun to be had.

Tonight Wildflowers headline Brighton Finest’s gig at the Hope, which comes with support from Nick Williams and The Victorian Hunter. Friday night is Trading Places night at the Green Door Store and this time around they’re focussing on Iggy Pop and the Stooges with a bill that features a host of DJs and bands headlined by Spit Shake Sisters.

On Saturday night Becky Becky are playing a free gig at the Green Door Store previewing their upcoming album. Meanwhile down at the Blind Tiger there’s another free gig with Spacenoid and AK/DK lined up to play.

Also on Saturday and Sunday there’s the Paddle Round The Pier festival taking place on Hove Lawns. As well as the opportunity the opportunity to try a whole host of water sports and watch the races from pier to pier culminating in the amusing Paddle Something Unusual race, there will be music on all day. Some of the highlights we spotted were Jennifer Left on at 2.45pm on Saturday, The Move Ons on at 5.45pm on Saturday, and Carnival Collective closing the music stages at 5pm on Sunday.

Becky Becky, Brighton’s premiere electro-pop band, have dropped a new track called ‘House of the Black Madonna’, a follow up to their excellent debut ‘The Harder Stuff’ and a precursor for their forthcoming, as yet untitled, first album due out later this year. The album was written in various places around Europe (Stockholm, Malmo, Berlin, Hamburg, Prague) and apparently recorded in a wooden chateau halfway up a mountain in the French alps.

Becky Becky have been quiet for a while due to a variety of reasons, Peter’s travelling, Gemma’s recent much-feted solo release as Woodpecker Wooliams and her work with Ghostpoet, and Tom’s departure from the band. But they’re back now and will be performing live along with Kellar and Cloud at a free-entry gig at the Green Door Store tonight, Saturday 20th April.

Weekend Gig Picks

Before we get onto this weekend’s gigs, we’re going to remind you all about Record Store Day. Hopefully you all know about this Saturday already, but did you know that as well as Resident getting involved, Borderline, Rarekind, Cult Hero, One Stop Records and RK Bass records will also be stocking some of the RSD exclusives. It’s sad that Rounder are no longer around to fly the flag, and a warning that you shouldn’t just go and support your local independent shops just one day of the year!

Anyway, onto the gigs. On Thursday we like the look of Tiny Dragons and Rotait on the support bill for Johnson and the Believers at the Green Door Store. If you fancy a bit more of a grand setting, Mountain Firework Company are on at Saint Georges Church in Kemptown.

Friday night’s pick is Brighton Music Blog favourite Laish, who’s headlining the Prince Albert supported by Emma Gattrill and Martha Rose.

Saturday Night we suggest you head down to the Blind Tiger where Flash Bang Band will be bringing their unique brand of indie pop to the party. Alternatively Cloud, Becky Becky and Kellar play at the Green Door Store.

We’ve also got a couple of picks for Sunday night – We’re very much looking forward to seeing Cate Ferris back in town at the Blind Tiger. She’s been on tour for a while and it seems like ages since we caught up with her. Over on the other end of town, it’s Brighton Folk night at the Brunswick, with Mike Newsham, Donna Fullman and Sam Green.

We don’t have much hip hop on this blog. Perhaps because there isn’t that much hip hop in Brighton. Or perhaps its for the same reason we don’t feature much indie pop or dance music, because so much of it just isn’t to our taste.

But there are exceptions and this is one. A fourfold set of remixes by Brighton boy Peter Mason, lead maestro of electro-pop outfit Becky Becky, whose single The Harder Stuff features the much-loved Woodpecker Wooliams and is a brilliant dose of sexy electro-punk.

Peter Mason is churning out a lot of top quality dance remixes at the moment, having produced an excellent remix of ‘Of course you exist’ for The Pictish Trail earlier this year (available as a free download from Fence Records). He has also produced a great remix of Woodpecker Wooliams ‘Sparrow’ single – out tomorrow, a week ahead of her much anticipated new album (see an earlier post on this blog)t

So, a man much in-demand and on the up. And if you take a listen to these reworkings of tracks from the 184-produced Where’s My Parade? you can hear why. The opening track Superman in particular is a powerful smash, giving full voice to a strong lyrical song.
