Weekend Gig Picks

After a break for reasons we can’t quite fathom ourselves, here’s our pick of great gigs coming up this weekend.

On Friday Les Enfants Terribles, one of our favourite monthly nights, returns to the Blind Tiger. This month the fantastic Momotaro are headlining, with support from The Beautiful Word, Poles Apart and Lunar Maria. Meanwhile, over at Sticky Mike’s, Demob Happy are curating this weekend’s Late Night Lingerie.

On Saturday Night The Galleons are holding their album launch at the Brighthelm Centre. Not only do they have the 60 piece Hullabaloo Community Choir performing with them, but they’ve also had their own beer brewed especially for the night. We’ve also spotted that Dark Horses are making a return with the first local gig performing material from their upcoming second album. You can catch them at Sticky Mike’s supported by The Querelles and Riddles.

Gigs of the Week

In a bit of our change to our weekly gig round up, which used to just focus on what was going to be happening at the weekend, from 2014 we’ll be looking at what’s going on for the whole week. We always played a little bit fast and loose with the concept of weekend, always starting on Thursdays (and even Wednesdays on some occasions), but inevitably there would be the odd gig that would slip through the net.

As it happens, our first post in the new format is starting with a recommendation for thursday night – Luo, Kudu Blue and Fools Empire at playing at the Green Door Store in a fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support. Four pound on the door goes to the charity.

Meanwhile, over at the Hope, Demob Happy headline a not-so-late-night Late Night Lingerie, with a couple of French bands also on the bill.

On Friday Night, Late Night Lingerie regulars Spit Shake Sisters are playing a free gig at the Blind Tiger, with Broadbay in support.Meanwhile, over at Hotel Pelirocco Japanese Sweets headline Synthesize Me. While the name Japanese Sweets may not be familiar, you’ll have probably read one of our many posts about Speak Galactic, which is one of Owen Thomas’ other projects.

Onto Saturday night – The Hundredth Anniversary are headlining at the Hope alongside The Grafham Water Sailing Club and I Like The Go Go.

At Sticky Mike’s, their regular Brighton Rock nights are back, with Dizzy Tales, The Evil Son, Saint Elmo and Mude this week.

Our last pick of the week is Almighty Planets who are hosting monthly nights at the Blind Tiger. Amongst the supports are Brighton’s Normanton Street.

Weekend Gig Picks

In Brighton, the first weekend in August is associated with being Pride – probably the biggest party in the local calendar. We’re not going to include that in our weekend gig picks because of the lack of local acts on the bill, but we have got a whole load of other gigs to tell you about, including a very special couple of days at the Green Door Store.

Tomorrow night IYES and Yumi & The Weather are supporting MT at the Prince Albert. It doesn’t cost anything to get in, but to get hold of a ticket you’ll need to register online.

There’s quite a few gigs on Friday that have caught our eye. AMiTY and Jacko Hooper are playing at Neighbourhood on St James Street, and The Jargonaughts (featuring ex members of Los Albertos) are on at the Gladstone. Over at The Hope multimedia electronica night The Outer Church hold the launch night for their new compilation with live music from Pye Corner Radio, Kember Norton, Embla Quickbeam and Wrong Signals.

Over Saturday and Sunday Green Door Store are holding an event called TwoThreeFour. There are over twenty bands on the bill, mostly from Brighton, including The New Union, Kill Moon, Faux Flux, Spit Shake Sisters, Dog in the Snow, GAPS, Written in Waters, The Hundredth Anniversary, Tyrannosaurus Dead, Ed Prosek, Tigercub, Foreign Skin, Wildcat Strike and Demob Happy. It’s an amazing line up, and it’s free – You’d be a fool to miss it.

Weekend Gig Picks

Here’s this weekend’s gig picks for you all. This week we’re extending things out to Monday, because there’s a gig that we can’t not mention.

On Friday night Martin Rossiter headlines the Source New Music Night at the Dome Studio Theatre. Support comes from The Beautiful Word and Jacko Hooper so this should be a bit special. Tickets are a bit pricier than a normal Source New Music though – so if you’d rather save your pennies then head down to Sticky Mike’s where the Physics House Band are hosting another Physics House Party. They’re playing a headline set with members of Flamingods, and there’s support from Luo, Caveman Genius, Demob Happy, and Shrine. Hush Hush Friday at the Blind Tiger caught our eye too – another free gig with FVNERALS topping the bill and Dog in the Snow supporting.

Saturday Night’s pick is Clowns, who are playing at the Prince Albert. If you like your weekends a bit funkier then The Impellers are on the bill at Craig Charles Funk and Soul Club at the Concorde.

Brighton Folk comes back to the Brunswick on Sunday Night, with Amy Hill and The Galleons playing.

The reason we’ve extended things out to Monday for this weekend’s picks is to include the Electric Soft Parade‘s album launch at the Green Door Store. The album is definitely the highlight of 2013 for us so far and will be on sale at the gig. Support comes from Crayola Lectern. Also on Monday, for those who prefer their ‘problem folk’ to sunshine pop, ex Brighton resident The Great Park returns from Germany for a gig at the Prince Albert, ably supported by local singer-songwriter Tandy Hard. Boon Magazine Launch headlined by The New Union

Thursday night was the launch of a new magazine for Brighton, promising music, fashion, art and culture. They heard a rumour that we like Brighton and that we like music so they invited us along to the Green Door Store where they had a whole host of local talent playing for them.

The night kicked off early. When the gig was first announced Tiger Cub were second on the bill, but another commitment initially meant them pulling out, and then got rearranged for them to play a short set early on. I missed Tiger Cub though, cos I was having my dinner. I also missed Spit Shake Sisters, and most of Kill Moon, and when I arrived the room was already so rammed out I couldn’t get in and get a decent view.

Demob Happy

Demob Happy were great though – melodic indie rock which sounded fantastic at the Green Door Store, but I bet would sound even better when you’re sitting in a field in the sun at a festival.

The New Union

The New Union were the big draw of the evening, and one of the main reasons why the night was sold out. Every time I see them they seem to get better and better – Their sound is richer, the songs are stronger. They’ve got a few slow songs in their set now which I’m sure will be great when they’re recorded, but they were in danger of losing the crowd a bit when they played them. With their more upbeat indie numbers they had the audience in the palm of their hand and had the room jumping. They ended their set with last year’s single Without You, and what I guess is going to be their new single which is due in the next few weeks. We’ll hopefully be bringing you more details of that very soon.

The first edition of Boon Magazine is out on May Day.

Normally midweek I put up a post about gigs that have caught our eye in the upcoming weekend. This week, I’m making an exception and writing a whole post about three gigs taking place on thursday night, all of which look fantastic.

The first of the three is Brighton Music Blog favourites Moulettes, who are playing at The Haunt. Moulettes are a fantastic band, but it’s not until you see them live that you truly appreciate how great they are. Support comes from local act The Slytones (who we’ve still yet to catch), and Robert Vincent.

AKDK were one of our favourite acts at this year’s Sea Monsters. Their new single Battersea is out soon, so to celebrate they’re headlining this month’s Source New Music at the Dome Studio Theatre. Support comes from DA-10 (who were also brilliant at Sea Monsters), Dog in the Snow and George Lazenbleep.

Last, but by no means least is another launch, but this time of a magazine rather than a single. Boon Magazine say that they’re going to feature music, fashion, photography and culture. The launch takes place at the Green Door Store, and is headlined by The New Union. There’s also going to be a burlesque dancer, and more music from Demob Happy, Kill Moon and Spit Shake Sisters.
