Another week, another new music round up. We’re kicking off this week with the new single from Black Honey which came out last Friday called Hello Today. We’ll be down the front for Black Honey’s sold out show next Thursday at Patterns. See you there.

Next up is Fear of Men who are off on tour again, covering Europe in September and October (stopping off at Patterns on 15th October), then off to America in November. To celebrate they’ve shared a video for another track from their Fall Forever album. This is Sane:

Bad Family have just shared their second single called I’m a Drunk. It seems that everyone I’m writing about is playing live soon – you can catch them at The Hope & Ruin next Monday.

The Hundredth Anniversary‘s first new music in a long time showed up a week or two ago. After I Was Thrown In The River is more melodic and less shoegaze than their early stuff, and is the first taster of their upcoming album Sea State Pictures.

The new Animal House EP Sorry comes out on 18th November. They’ve put out a video for the track Heavy which you can see below. We’d write about when they’re playing live, but they’re probably on stage at the Prince Albert as I’m typing this:

A Drop of Blood in a Bowl of Milk is the new EP from Whiskey for the Wounded which came out on 22nd September. If you missed the launch last week, you can catch them at the next Indie Noir night at the Verdict on 13th October.

Last but not least we had news in a few weeks ago of End Call, an album released on cassette by Bloody Death. Turn The Tables is the track that they’re choosing to showcase the album with on bandcamp, but the rest of the tape isn’t all trashy guitar – there’s some mellower stuff on there too.

Brighton Music Blog Top Ten 2015

Here’s a blog post that I meant to write back at the start of December, but you’ve probably read enough excuses from me about why I’m not blogging as much as I ought to these days. As ever, it’s been a nightmare to cut things down to ten (which is why we’ve got eleven), and if you asked me tomorrow the order would no doubt change. But any further ado, here’s our end of year round-up:

10 : Tigercub / Demob Happy

Back in October Demob Happy snuck out their debut album Dream Soda, and then at the end of November Tigercub released their Repressed Semantics EP. Both releases are fantastic, and both bands have been touring hard all year. we couldn’t choose between the two:

9 : Prince Vaseline

Prince Vaseline’s first full length A Naturally Coloured Pleasure really was a pleasure for us when it came out in the middle of this year:

8 : Black Honey

Last time we saw Black Honey they were supporting fellow Brightonians The Wytches at The Haunt and they wiped the floor with them:

7 : Grasscut

We kept going back to Grasscut’s third LP Everyone Was a Bird, and everytime it sounded better and better, and then last month they gave us a video premier of The Field:

6 : The Go! Team

We thought that The Go! Team had split up for good after 2011’s Proof of Youth, so their return this year, sounding fresher than ever, with The Scene Between was some of best news we heard:

5 : IYES

IYES have kept a lower profile live this year, but put out two very strong EPs called Part One and Part Two:

4 : Clowwns

We’ve been waiting for The Artful Execution of Macho Bimbo for years here at the blog. We only wish we’d been recording when Bleeding Hearts label boss Chris explained the reasons for all the delays over a pint about a year ago, although half of it was prefaced with “this is just between us…”

3 : Sea Bed

Sea Bed were our great new find this year. Electronic music with soul who we end up evangalising about to everyone we meet. They haven’t got much music online at the moment, but there’s promises of exciting things to come this year:

2 : The Fiction Aisle

Heart Map Rubric was a thing a majestic, beautiful work of art and was arguably the finest thing that Tom White has put his name to to date:

1: GAPS

GAPS managed to top last year’s collaboration with Maya Jane Coles with In, Around The Moments, their first long player which straddled the line between electronic and acoustic while managing to sound unlike anything else which would be labelled folktronica:

A relatively quiet week for new music this week, but here’s what we’ve got to share. First up is the new GAPS All Me, All You remix EP, which the first music we’ve embedded from Spotify, so hopefully this will work. There’s remixes from Maya Jane Coles and Alex Arnout of two tracks from their album In, Around The Moments, as well as the original versions, and you can also buy the EP on iTunes here.

Black Honey‘s new single is called Corrine. It’s getting a physical release in a month’s time on 23rd October on Foxfive records, and the band are heading out on tour for most of October, finishing things up with a hometown gig at the Hope & Ruin on 5th November. Continue reading →

Great Escape / Alternative Escape Preview

In case you hadn’t realised, this weekend is The Great Escape festival, probably the most important musical event in the local calendar. There’s a few Brighton bands tucked in the main festival, but the bulk of the homegrown talent features in the line-up of the Alternative Escape – a sister festival that runs side by side where for most events you won’t need a wrist band, or have to shell out any money to see some fantastic live acts. There are literally hundreds of bands playing over dozens of events so to help guide you through the weekend here’s our pick of some of the BN postcode-based performers you can catch.

The fun begins on Wednesday night with Late Night Lingerie vs The Great Escape at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, where can catch the first of Demob Happy‘s many sets of the festival as well as Skirts last ever gig. Inspired Artists Agency who represent quite a few Brighton bands are taking over Latest Music Bar on Thursday, and we’re hoping to pop in for The Slytones at 2.55pm and Moulettes who play at 6.30pm. There are 20 bands over 28 sets on at The Mesmerist on thursday, on the stages put together by Liberty Music PR, amongst others. If we had to pick one it would be Phantom Runners who are on at 9.40pm. Bleach is being taken over by Strong Island Recordings and Pic & Vinyl on thursday, where Brighton Music Blog favourites Curxes take to the stage at 5.40pm. Over at London Road’s newest cafe Presuming Ed, Cate Ferris tops their line up. Miamigo play their debut show at Patterns (formerly Audio) at 6.45pm.

Brightonsfinest are in charge at Latest on Friday, and they’ve got a cracking line up. You could pop in at any time and see a great local band, but we’ll be popping in for GAPS at 2.45pm and Spit Shake Sisters at 7.45pm. The Mesmerist also has a pretty good line up, with Black Honey and Oslo Parks catching our eye. One of Brighton’s most written about bands at the moment are The Magic Gang, and they head up the DIY / Echochamp showcase at Bleach, playing at 10pm.

Moving on to Saturday, Earworm events and Northbrook college are hosting proceedings at Bar Rogue where we’re tipping Flash Bang Band at 6pm and newcomers Bloom at 6.50pm. The Fiddlers Elbow are having a street party, which is a great idea since I couldn’t get in to see the bands I wanted to last year. If I were you, I’d be down there for Yumi & The Weather at 4pm and Tigercub at 5pm. Marwoods Cafe are hosting some more gentle gigs over Friday and Saturday, but expect things to get a bit more riotous when Black Rooster Black Shag take to the stage at 8.10pm on Saturday night. Tyrannosaurus Dead play their last ever gig in Brighton at Fitzherbert’s a part of Cupboard Music’s line up. They’re only playing one more gig after that, and that’s in London, so expect it to be rammed. Hotel Pelirocco also have an all Brighton line-up – Time for T headline at 10pm, but get down there for 3pm to catch grasshopper who are fantastic. Bleeding Hearts are putting on a gig on Saturday afternoon at the Rialto theatre, which will be the first opportunity to buy headliner Clowwns debut album. It’s not an official Great Escape gig, but it would be churlish not to give them a shoutout. Finally, one of the very last gigs of the weekend is KLDSCP’s party at Sticky Mike’s which doesn’t even kick off until 1am. Mount Bank, who’ve put out one of favourite EPs of the year so far are playing, so hopefully we’ll still be standing by the time they’re on.

April Top Ten

Here’s our top ten tracks that we’ve been listening to in April:

1 Sea Bed – Caves

Technically this came out last month (and we included Haunted in last month’s top ten), but their Rosso EP hasn’t left our stereo, and their debut gig at the Prince Albert supporting Them The Sky was awesome.

2 Momotaro – Roots

Momotaro’s new EP Highest actually came out yesterday which made it May, but since the band put up Roots from the EP on Soundcloud, it’s been on heavy rotation around here.

3 Fiction Aisle – Each and Every One

It was actually Each and Every One’s joint double A side that we wrote about a few weeks ago, but it was this track of the pair that really caught our attention.

4 Curxes – What You Want

Curxes debut album is out in just a few hours time! We’ve been a big fan of the band’s retro electro (or Blitz Pop as they like to call it) for ages, so can’t wait to hear the rest of the record.

5 The Go! Team – Ye Ye Yamaha

Where so many bands put out re-releases or remixes for Record Store Day, The Go! Team put out two brand new tracks. That’s how it should be done.

6 Black Honey – Spinning Wheel

Spinning Wheel is our favourite track that should have been in a Tarantino film this month and deserves to be played LOUD. We’ve not caught them live yet, so we’re hoping to get to see them at the Great Escape in a few weeks.

7 Clowwns – Idiot Bouncing

The Artful Execution of Macho Bimbo, the debut album by one of Brighton’s finest live bands Clowwns, has been in gestation since before we started the blog so we’re pleased that it’s finally getting released soon. Idiot Bouncing is the free download put up to persaude us all to buy the record.

8 Ambassadeurs – Can’t See You

Can’t See You is another track which we haven’t actually featured on the blog, having posted up other tracks from the EP, but for our top ten we had to post the release’s title track.

9 Miamigo – Hard To Love

DIY mag wrote “Bands could spend decades figuring out how to write the biggest hooks and they might not get close to this” about Hard to Love, and who are we to disagree.

10 Gazelle Twin – Love and Mercy

After doing her best to give us nightmares with last year’s Unflesh, Gazelle Twin is doing her best to gain our affections again with her cover of Brian Wilson’s Love and Mercy.

New Brighton Music

Here’s this week’s dose of new music, catching up after a break last week when we slacked a bit because it was Easter.

The first tune this week is the debut single from Tom White’s new band The Fiction Aisle. It’s a A-side with the track below A Promise Kept being backed with another new song Each & Every One. It came out yesterday on new Brighton label Chord Orchard and you can download it now from Bandcamp.

Next up is the new single from Black Honey. Spinning Wheel is the bands liveliest track yet. sounding like something from a Tarantino soundtrack. The single came out last week on Duly Noted records and is backed with Madonna, which we featured last month.

After a bit of a break (up until last week, the last time they had posted to their facebook page was February 2014), The Bobby McGees are back. Four new tracks have been posted to Jimmy McGee’s YouTube page, with Kings of England being the track they used to tell us about the new material on facebok.

Back to the rock now for the new track from Jolta. One Apple Tree is taken from the band’s debut EP Sunset Surrender which came out last week:

Ambassadeurs new EP came out yesterday as an exclusive download on Beatport. If you buy your music elsewhere, you’ll have to wait until the end of the month, but till then here’s track two from the EP, My Way:

BentCousin have gone disco. Technically it’s not just Bentcousin, they’ve collaborated with Alcatraz for their joint new single Under The Sun, which you can pick up on Bandcamp for only a pound.

Last but by no means least is the new single from Bunty, which comes out on Beatabet next month. Before she releases We Are Here, Bunty is off on a tour of the UK which started earlier this month in Norwich and stops off at the Speigeltent as part of Brighton Fringe on 11th May. You’ll also be able to catch her a few days later as part of the Great Escape.

New Music

Another week, another new music roundup. Ten tunes for you this week, two of which have been posted before, but are worthy of another mention, but we’ll tell you about them when we get to them.

Our first track is by The Go! Team, whose new album The Scene Between comes out at the end of the month. If you pre-orer the album you’ll get instant downloads of What D’You Say, which you can hear below, Blowtorch, which we featured last month, and the album’s title track.

Glass City Vice‘s new single Landslide comes out next Monday. If we’d have been a bit more on the ball on following up from the mail we had from their people we’d have been able to tell you about their gig supporting Dry The River at the Concorde on tuesday night, but at least we weren’t so slack that we missed telling you about their headline gig at The Hope & Ruin on 15th April.

Black Honey have put up new track Madonna which is coming out on a double A side single on 6th April. It’ll be backed with another new track Spinning Wheel and will be released on Duly Noted Records.

Black Fields new single Monster came out last friday. It’s currently available to download for free on their bandcamp page.

David Bennett sent us the video for his new track Atoms the other day, which shows David playing all of the instruments, as he does on the track itself.

Mustang Japan is taken from High Tyde‘s upcoming Fuzz EP, out next Monday. The band are off on tour later this month, starting off with a couple of dates at the Haunt where they’re support Peace at their sold out nights.

Luo and Monoman are a couple of Brighton artists who have tracks featured on a new compilation put out by Brighton label SmallPrint. We’ve featured one of Luo’s tracks here (they have two tracks on the compilation) but you can download Eidolon and the rest of the album for free via the SmallPrint facebook page.

Mount Bank‘s Island Life EP is also out next Monday. We posted up Everything Is Glass from it a few weeks back, and here’s another track – Summer Camp (Anenon Remix). You can pre-order the EP on iTunes here.

Finally the two tracks that we’ve featured before – We first wrote about Glow by IYES back in November last year, when it was scheduled for a released in December. Things got pushed back, but it’s finally out now. You can watch the video below or buy the track on iTunes here.

Last, and by no means least since it headed up February Top Ten, is the video for Demob Happy‘s Young & Numb. When we posted the track last month only the audio stream was available, but since there’s now video too it’s worth re-sharing.

New Music – Clowwns, Eagles for Hands, J Tropic, Black Honey, Nightkites, Mount Bank

Here’s what’s likely to be our last new music post of October, with half a dozen brand new tunes for you to feast your ears on.

First up is the subtly renamed Clowwns (formerly with just the one w), with a video for their upcoming single Shame on You. They’ve been one of the city’s best live bands for a while, so it’s great to hear the music getting out there.

Spirit Hips is the new single from Eagles for Hands. The track is less housey than the other singles that he’s put out this year, but still packs a massive dancefloor punch. It comes out on 17th November, and is followed the following Monday (24th) with a gig at Sticky Mike’s.

Who U Are is the third and final track from J Tropic‘s Love Up EP, which comes out today on Duly Noted. We’ve featured the other tracks – Love Up and Solid Gold, and the third track doesn’t disappoint.

Sticking with Duly Noted records, we’ve got a new track from Black Honey, which is going to feature on their debut EP Sleep Forever. Bloodlust is the fourth track on the EP which is going to be onsale at upcoming gigs:

Next up we’ve got a track from a brand new Brighton band called Nightkites. Drones is the lead track from an EP of the same name which is available to download now from Soundcloud. If you were a fan of Burial, this should be right up your street.

Finally, we have the a new track from Mount Bank, foxing our attempts to write about it giving it a title of the symbol of a crescent. The track is some lovely ambient electronica, unassumingly aimless for the first minute before a repeated piano motif brings everything together:

New Music

Another bumper New Music post for you all. We were out at gigs every night last week, so things have built up once again.

Our first track is by Heliopause, with I seem too cold (Faulty remix). Faulty is a night that Heliopause has been putting on at Brighton Digital Festival for the past few years and is taking place as I type at Fitzherberts. This is what happens when you spend your time going to gigs rather than writing blog posts.

Oslo Parks launch their debut single Twin on Thursday (2nd October) with a gig at the Green Door Store. Here’s a remix of the single from Germany’s VIMES:

Another demo from Black Honey surfaced last week. The Taste doesn’t offer any big surprises from their previous uploads – more widescreen American sounding rock’n’roll:

Swing Song is the new single from Kovak. It’s coming out on 20th October, and the launch party is going to be held at The Hope on 8th November:

Clash premiered the new video from Tyrannosaurus Dead last week. Local Bullies is taken from the band’s forthcoming album Flying Ant Day, which is available to pre-order now.

Momotaro have released a re-recorded version of their track Kite, which originally appeared on their album Second Side. It’s been released by German label Blue Dye and comes backed with a house remix by Deep Blast & Ricco Rizzo.

Red Shortbread is the debut track from Jack Watts. It was produced by Tim Bidwell (who’s worked with the likes of Jennifer Left and Cate Ferris), and the video was made by Create Studio’s Kenny McCracken:

Lilly is taken from The DuBarrys forthcoming self titled EP. Other than the name of the EP, and that one of the other tracks is the lovely, acoustic Undress Your Soul, details of the EP are rather sketchy and we can’t even find so much as a release date for it. More details as we hear of them:

Finally, we have Obelisk, a new video from Battery Operated Orchestra. Obelisk is taken from the album Incomplete Until Broken, which is available now on Bandcamp.
