Dark Horses supported by the New Eves at the Hope & Ruin gallery

On Saturday night Dark Horses played a launch show at the Hope & Ruin to celebrate their new album While We Were Sleeping. They were joined by album producer Bob Earland on synths, and guitarist Paul Philips also got on stage for a couple of tracks. Support came from Brighton quartet The New Eves, with a DJ turn between acts from Dark Horses long time photographer Ali Tollervey. The band are always visually arresting – this time augmented with visuals from James GM (which felt like they could have been a bit more prominent in our opinion) – so we got there early and got a good spot down the front to take some photos:

The Go! Team at Chalk gallery

Last night the Go! Team played their first hometown gig for five years. Since then, they’ve released two albums – Get Up Sequences Part One, and Get Up Sequences Part Two, and this gig was the final date of the tour promoting Part Two. The set covered their whole career – they played at least one song from each album, but the night lent most heavily from their debut (which they noted turns 19 this year) and their latest records. Quatermass III supporting Saint Etienne at the Old Market

Fujiya & Miyagi at Patterns photo gallery

Last night Fujiya & Miyagi played a home town gig at Patterns as part of their tour to support their new album Slight Variations, and the band were on top form playing a set made up of a mix of tracks from the new album all the way back to Ankle Injuries. Support came Bunkr, who previously supported Fujiya & Miyagi back in 2016 under his Lost Idol guise.

Sairie – The Cinder Sheet EP launch

On Wednesday night we paid a visit to the Folklore Rooms for a gig to celebrate the launch of Sairie‘s new EP The Cinder Sheet. The EP was conceived over lockdown, when Emma and Jon from the band started playing around with covers from film soundtracks. Now expanded to a eight track EP and shared with everyone, the release leaps from French New Wave to Sci Fi to Morricone, all remade in Sairie’s psych-folk style.

Support at the gig from Alex Painter (from Great Pagans) and Maria Marzaioli (from Slum of Legs) new project YOU&TH, who pushed the folk window out to embrace jazz, loops, traditional Italian songs, and field recordings.

Gig catchup – Ruunes, New German Cinema, Hanya & Collect Call

Hi! We’re back! We didn’t mean to go away to be honest, but January is always really quiet and then Covid finally hit, and then we were away for a bit, and all in all for no particular reason it’s not been until this week that we’ve taken any decent photos of any Brighton bands. But what a week it’s been – Last Saturday we saw Kayla Painter at the Rosehill, ably supported by Ruunes, AKA Ed Chivers, better known as half of AK/DK and quarter of Fujiya & Miyagi. Then Monday night saw the live debut of New German Cinema, supporting Kip Berman (formerly the front man of Pains of Being Pure at Heart) at the Prince Albert. New German Cinema is the side project of Fear of Men‘s Jess Weiss, who’s worked with Kip Berman in the past, so it made sense that she would be supporting when he was in town. She’s going to be playing an Alternative Escape gig too, so watch this space and we’ll keep you updated. And then on Tuesday night we went to a packed out Hope & Ruin to catch Hanya supported by Collect Call. They’re both playing the same unofficial Alt Escape gig on the Thursday of Great Escape weekend at Presuming Eds. We’ll be doing a writeup of all the local acts playing at the Great Escape and Alt Escape (and unofficial) gigs, and already it looks like more Brighton bands than ever are playing, so expect a bumper post soon

Great Escape First Fifty at Chalk, featuring Heights and Isabelle Brown

Let’s talk about the Great Escape. And let’s not mess about, it is probably the single most important event in Brighton’s musical calendar (alongside it’s sister event the Alt Escape). We missed it last year and we missed it this year, but the festival have just announced their first batch of artists for the 2022 festival taking place 11-14 May. They call this release their “First Fifty” and to make a bit more noise about it they put a couple of gigs – one in London (where Brighton was represented by Lime Garden), and another at Chalk where local newcomers Heights and Isabelle Brown supported Sam Ryder. They invited us along, we brought our camera, and you can see our pics below (click through to view large)

AK/DK supported by Genn at Chalk : gallery post

Last Friday AK/DK headlined at Chalk – a gig we had been looking forward to for a LONG time. It was an AK/DK gig that was one of the first cancellations due to Covid, when they had originally been booked in to play Brighton Electric in April last year. It’s been pretty much an eighteen month wait to see them, but they didn’t disappoint, showing that they’re still one of Brighton’s best live bands. Support came from one of our new fave bands Genn. Ġenn and Mangö supporting Pins at the Green Door Store Gallery

Last Friday, Melting Vinyl invited us down to the Green Door Store to see Pins supported by two local bands – Ġenn and Mangö. It was the first time we’d caught either band, and we weren’t disappointed – in fact we’ve already pencilled in Ġenn’s next gig – at the Hope & Ruin on 6th December, supported by Currls and Cabria – into our diary. Projector at the Hope & Ruin Gallery

Gigs have been back for a few weeks now, but it’s taken me until now to bring my camera along to see some local bands and take enough photos to justify a blog post. But last Friday Projector played a storming set for the hometown date of their current tour at the Hope & Ruin and we found our way to the front. Support came from Hutch (who we did see) and Sleep Council (who we saw a bit of, but only from the back).

It’s great to be back at gigs, and hopefully we’ll have some more pictures to share very soon
