August Top Ten

1) There’s one standout winner in August’s top ten. They’ve just released the best selling Rock Debut in since Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, and had the first number one album for a Brighton band since, erm, Conor Maynard. This is Figure It Out by Royal Blood

2) David Harks latest offering Open Arms has been getting a lot of plays around these parts, keeping the summer alive when the sun deserted us for most of August:

3) We first wrote about Believe in Nothing by The New Union back at the beginning of July, but it didn’t get released until 4th August. The band will be back on the Brighton stage on 16th September supporting Coasts at the Komedia.

4) Hushabye was originally the b-side to Jennifer Left‘s 2012 single Black Dog. This month the album of the same name got released:

5) The Night is the double a-side to to Twin, which is Oslo Park‘s debut single which came out on 25th August:

6) Curxes new single Valkyrie was also out this month, continuing their track record of packing a great tune into a full on aural assault:

7) The Wytches album Annabel Dream Weaver was also one of this months highlights, and it was preceded by the single Burn Out The Bruise

8) We’ve been enjoying the fragile folk of Lutine‘s single Sallow Tree. Noted music have just added up another track from the band’s forthcoming album to their website today.

9) Dark Horses made a return this month with Hail Lucid State, their second album produced by Richard Fearless. Saturn Returns was the single, not to be confused with Goldie’s 1998 album

10) Duly Noted Record’s Black Honey remain just as elusive for the release of their second single Teenager, with no information about the band forthcoming other than a phone number to contact them on…

 

New Music

Here’s our first new music post of August. There’s doesn’t seem as many gigs around at the moment, but that hasn’t translated in and slowing down of the new music we get to write about.

First up is Curxes with their new single Valkyrie. Valkyrie has been a staple of the band’s live sets for a while, and they first mentioned the track to us in an interview we did with them back in February last year where they described it as “probably the most batshit thing we’ve done so far”. You can’t argue with that. The single comes with remix from Deluxe Flamingos and an instrumental, and is out on 18th August, available for preorder here.

The mysterious Black Honey have put out a second track. Teenager has a faster tempo than last month’s Sleep Forever, but is still drenched with reverb heavy guitars and a vocal Lana Del Rey would be proud of.

We went along to the launch of the new Slum of Legs single at Sticky Mike’s a couple of weeks back, but at the time Begin to Dissolve hadn’t been posted online. You can listen and buy it now though, via Tuff Enuff Records, the record label offshoot of Riots Not Diets. The single is an anarchic lo-fi romp which takes no prisoners, which for the sake of clarification, is a good thing in our book.

Slum of Legs at Sticky Mike's 23/7/14

Lick Music, the musical offshoot of the people who make the fantastic frozen yoghurt have put out some tasters, but not of the dairy product variety. Following on from the Milk & Biscuits tape put out earlier this year, Lick are putting out another cassette on August 25th, this time by Octopuses. Once again it’s a four-tracker, with two studio tracks on side A and two live tracks on side B. Lead Track Cool Story Bro is set to appear on Octopuses debut album Yes Please due later this year.

RiD are a new band who’ve just put out their first EP. The EP is entitled Move Juice and the title track is called Smile:

Japanese Sweets, the ambient side project from Speak Galactic’s Owen Thomas, have put up two new tracks on Soundcloud. Our favourite is the effervescent Brief Luminescence:

Rather more gentle is Sallow Tree, the new track from Lutine. It’s being released as a single on 25th August, and precede’s the folk duo’s debut album White Flowers which comes out at the end of September.

Native sons email with their debut track Humanise in the middle of the heatwave a couple of weeks back, so it almost got lost as we stayed away from our overheating PC in an attempt to try and stay cool. Here it is now though, with it’s melodic tropical guitars and anthemic choruses.

Our last new music roundup featured an IYES remix, and here we are only a week later with another. This time it’s their slow-mo take on Indiana‘s Heart on Fire:

Slightly delayed since we’ve been on holiday, here’s out top ten tunes from June:

1 Fear of Men – Descent

Descent is the second single taken from Fear of Men’s fantastic debut album Loom. The band have spent the past few months supporting Pains of Being Pure at Heart across the US and Europe. The tour’s now over, so hopefully they’re taking a well earned rest before playing a few festival dates over the summer, including Green Door Store’s 234 festival taking place over the August Bank Holiday Weekend.

2 Anushka – Mansions

Mansions is taken from Anushka’s brand new album Broken Circuit, out now on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings label. It’s good, but play it loud and it’s even better.

3 Jacko Hooper – Egg Shells

Because we’ve been away we missed the launch party for Jacko Hooper’s new For You EP, which took place last week at the Green Door Store. The EP is out now on One Inch Badge’s record label.

4 Palm Springs – Seal My Fate

Seal My Fate is one of those slow burners which has got under our skin a little bit more every time we’ve played it. It’s out now on 7″ on Random Acts of Vinyl

5 Alex Banks – All You Can Do

The whole of Alex Banks’ new album Illuminate but we’ve decided to put the Gazelle Twin collaboration All You Can Do into our top ten.

6 Moulettes – So It Goes

To promote their new album Constellations, Moulettes put out a double A-side single, with Lady Vengeance backed with So It Goes which we’ve featured.

7 Bunty – We Are Here

We Are Here is the new single from the ever-creative Bunty, launched at last month’s Spectrum night at the Dome Studio Theatre.

8 Black Honey – Sleep Forever

Black Honey are the latest band to have a single put out by Duly Noted Records, which have put out previous releases by IYES and Fickle Friends. In a change of style for the label, Sleep Forever’s backing isn’t electronica but lush reverb drenched guitars.

9 The Mojo Fins – Longwave Reach

Longwave Reach is the latest single from The Mojo Fins brand new album Circa, which has been getting plenty of plays at Brighton Music Blog towers.

10 Faux Flux – You Know

Fuax Flux came out with another new track in June, the summery You Know.

Here’s this week’s dose of new music for you all. We’re kicking things off with Tyrannosaurus Dead, who have a new split single coming out soon with Joanna Gruesome. Post Holiday Dead Song is out on 7″ on July 21st, and can be pre-ordered now via Odd Box Records.

Bar Stool Preachers are a new local ska punk band. Here’s the video for their debut release One Fool Down:

We can’t stop listening to the Mother of Billions we posted up last week. Where the original had a classy trip hop feel, the Arshaw Remix gives Universe a sexy house sheen:

News about Hurricane, the first single to be taken from Will Mussett‘s debut album, only reached us this evening. Here’s the lyric video for the track, taken from the record due later this year.

Black Honey‘s first track was also a new arrival in our inbox today. The band are already getting props from Royal Honey and The Wytches, which should be more than enough recommendation to get your ears around Sleep Forever

Fable is a new Brighton based singer songwriter, but don’t let the description pigeon hole her. At only 19 years old she’s already provided vocals for the upcoming Orbital album and now releases her first track I Speak Words

Back in the 90s, angelic voiced Andrew Montgomery was better known as lead singer of Geneva. Since then he’s been involved in a number of musical projects, but later this year releases his debut solo album. After the Storm is the album’s opener and a taste of what we can expect when Ruled By Dreams comes out on 5th October.

Our last track this week is Obstacle by Mindofalion. The single is out on July 18th, with a launch gig the following day at The Hope:
