Spectrum always has great lines ups, but they pulled out all the stops for Record Store Day – almost a given since the nights are put on in association with Resident, who had people queuing up from 1pm the day before Record Store Day as well as a live 6Music broadcast from Lauren Laverne with Norman Cook and Tim Burgess as guests.
The day kicked off at 2pm and featured performances from Buzz Holly, Underhound, Via Tirana, Jessica Bishop, Normanton Street, Catherine Ireton, Dela Lupa, Lucas and King, Calico, Jonezy and Arif, Barnacles, Squid, Yumi and the Weather, MOSS, Merlin Tonto, Mrisi, Gang and Tiger Cub. We popped along for the last few hours with our camera to catch the action, shooting Yumi & The Weather, Merlin Tonto, Gang and Tigercub‘s sets:
Friday night was the latest Spectrum event held at the Dome Studio Theatre, organised in collaboration between the Dome and Resident records. This month’s even was an Anti Ghost Moon Ray showcase, headlined by the jaw dropping Gazelle Twin, in support of her new album Unflesh. Also on the bill here her label mates Great Pagans and Bernholz, whose album How Things Are Made is also out now.

This Saturday is Record Store Day – a day to celebrate independent record shops, and a day when a whole load of records get put out on special edition vinyl. This year also happens to be Resident Records 10th Birthday, so they’re laying on even more treats than normal. A host of local bands are putting out releases – Fear of Men are releasing a coloured vinyl edition of their album (which doesn’t get a full release until the following Monday), and Metronomy have a one sided 12” of Love Letters, as remixed by Soulwax. The full list of Brighton releases is below, with the full list of everything Resident will be stocking over on their website.
Anushka / Distorted Air EP 12″
Mark Chadwick / Red Sky 7″
Cuz / Tametebako LP
Natasha Khan + Jon Hopkins / Garden’s Heart 7″
Fear of Men / Loom LP
The Levellers / Carry Me 12″
Metronomy / Love Letters (Soulwax remix) 12″
Luke Sital Singh / Greatest Lovers 7″
The Wedding Present / EP4 Can 10″
Records Store Day is less than a month away, and this week the list of exclusive records available was announced. There are six shops taking part in Record Store Day on April 20th – Resident, Borderline, Rarekind, Cult Hero, One Stop Records and RK Bass – each of whom will be getting a selection of this year’s releases in. The bigger shops will have more stock, but they’ll also have bigger queues.
We’ve spotted a few Brighton bands amongst the exclusives. So far we’ve seen from Bat For Lashes (a 7″ with different versions of Laura an Marilyn), British Sea Power (The Facts are Right on 7″), and Curxes (who remix Chvrches ‘Recover’), but the list isn’t final yet – There’ll be even more bands added over the next three weeks.
