Barbershop Trio

Brighton band Seadog kicked off their first national tour on Saturday with a gig in a barber shop. The Gloucester Road Barber has Elliot Smith inspired decor and apparently once had a man living upstairs named Elliot Smith (not that one).

It was the perfect venue for Seadog to mark the start of their first tour of the U.K. as the band are much influenced by Elliot Smith, having hosted a tribute night in the same venue in 2010. The new line up includes accordion which gives them a Decemberists-esque edge to their established harmony-laden acoustic jaunty sound.

Seadog will be supporting Kenneth Ishak on tour, a delightful surprise of pop sensibilities with indie undertones from Norway, described as “where Big Star and Real Estate collide.”

You can catch Seadog and Kenneth Ishak at:

3rd Dec – Brighton/Gloucester Road Barbershop
4th Dec – Northampton/The labour club
5th Dec – London/12 Bar Club
6thDec – Edinburgh/Medina
7th Dec – Edinburgh/Sneaky Pete´s
8th Dec – Glasgow/13th Note

Also supporting were Brighton band G-Minor, launching their first EP ‘Under No Illusion’. The band have come a long way in the last few months, combining melodic harmonies and engaging lyricism – definitely a band to watch.

The Hydrant plays host to sleazy rock’n’roll

The Hydrant pub on the London Road played host to some sleazy garage band rock’n’roll last night Five raucous and talented bands for free made for an energy-filled noisy bargain of a night.

First up was Thee Mouldous Hypotenuse, who played electric garage-style blues songs with passion and verve.

Next up the hardest-gigging and hardest-rockin’ band in town, Deadbeat Descendent. They’ve been described as a combination of the Stooges and the Fall, which is pretty spot on. They put on a pretty lively performance.

Out-of-town mayhem came via the Silver Brazilians who produced a blistering live show of excellent bluesy swamp rock. Powerful songs – and enough charisma to break into a version of the Beatles’ Happy Birthday mid set when they heard there was a birthday celebrator in the audience!

Next up were Clowns, one of the best live bands in town, with their spikey and sharp post-punk pop songs. The vocals suffered a little from the Hydrant’s sound system by this point and couldn’t seem to keep up with lead singer Miles’ leaping off the stage and dashing into the audience, but it was great fun. They ended a wonderful set with their classic ‘She calls me a Clown’.

Last to play were the headliners Mudlow, taking us past midnight and into the early hours. More bluesy garage band sound, loud and fast as it ought to be.

Sea Monsters

In case you’ve missed it this week, Sea Monsters – a mini festival / series of gigs, put on by local Promoters One Inch Badge – is back next January, expanding by a night on this January’s five night run at the Prince Albert. This year there’s six consecutive nights of gigs, all from local bands (which means that if we’re not writing about it, we’re missing a trick). Danny and the Champions of the World at GDS

Danny and the Champions of the World played the Green Door Store last night and rocked the house.

The band have dropped any semblance of folkism and gone all out for a rockin’ set, with a sound and pace as big as Springsteen’s.

Support was from the excellent The Lucky Strikes, a great live band reminiscent of The Frames with some fabulous songs and a lively show. We look forward to seeing them again in Brighton!

On gigs and things

One of the best things about living in Brighton, and one thing I really can’t ignore on this blog, is the fantastic live music scene. However, one thing I’m not going to try and do is put together a comprehensive list of who’s playing where. I could put in a lot of time and effort, but inevitably I would miss things, and there are other places you could look which already do the same thing – One of the best sites for this is The Source, or if you would rather someone read things out to you, Juice do a round up of the gigs in the evenings too. I will mention the odd gig here and there when they come onto my radar, and there’s some more bloggers joining me soon, who no doubt will be able to talk about some of the bands and gigs that I’ve missed.

It is worth mentioning the Source and Juice monthly new music nights though – The next Source New Music night is tomorrow (Thursday 10th November) at the Pavilion Theatre, and is headlined by AK/DK with The Woo!Worths, June Deer and Cate Ferris (the photo above was taken by me and is on the flyer for the event). More details here. The next Juice New Music Showcase is on the 30th November at the Green Door Store and is headlined by Ice Black Birds. More details here.
